This study examined relationship among depression, self-efficacy, and resilience and influence of depression and self-efficacy on resilience and its sub-scales among homeless people. Subjects were 20 homeless people participating in a humanities program co-organized by a university in Gyeonggi Province and a homeless support center in Suwon City. Depression, self-efficacy, and resilience, important psychosocial characteristics of homeless people, were measured by the Korean version of Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Self-efficacy Scale (SES), and Korean Resilience Quotient (KRQ-53), respectively. Qualitative interviews were also conducted for in-depth analysis of psychosocial characteristics of homeless people. Interviews were conducted individually by a semi-structured questionnaire with each of 15 homeless people who were recommended by the center and agreed to participate in the interview. Demographic characteristics and characteristics of major variables were checked by frequency analysis and technical statistics. Correlation analysis was performed to examine relationship between psychosocial characteristics of the homeless people and multiple regression analysis was conducted to check influence of depression and self-efficacy on resilience and its sub-scales. The findings are as follows: First, no significant relations were found among depression, self-efficacy, and resilience depending on age and homeless period of the homeless people. Second, no significant relations were found between age and homeless period and the psychosocial characteristics (depression, self-efficacy, and resilience). However, a negative relationship was found between depression and self-efficacy, a positive relationship between self-efficacy and resilience, and a negative relationship between depression and resilience. Third, resilience was significantly affected by depression (p<.01) and self-efficacy (p<.05) with a high value(64%). Also, sub-scales of resilience were significantly influenced by depression and self-efficacy: self-controlability(p<.05) was affected by depression and interpersonal ability (p<.05) and positiveness (p<.01) were affected by self-efficacy. The highest value of was positiveness followed by interpersonal ability and self-controlability. In terms of the effect of depression and self-efficacy on the total value of resilience, both the variables had a significant effect on the total value of resilience. The qualitative interviews were categorized as sub-scales with respect to the three major variables: depression, self-efficacy, and resilience. Depression was expressed in terms of interpersonal relationship and economic ability, self-efficacy in terms of low and high self-efficacy, and resilience in terms of changes of attitude towards life. This study is very meaningful in that it verified the effect of depression and self-efficacy on resilience among homeless people on whom few studies were conducted in Korea. The findings suggest a need for approach considering psychological characteristics and mental health problems to understand homeless people correctly and help their self-support effectively.
