This study analyzes Pyeong-Sijo and Sasel-Sijo of the intangible cultural heritage by region and identifies each of their musical characteristics. The region subject to the study are Gyeongje, Naepoje, Yeongje, Wanje and Seokamje. After looking into the history and score materials, Pyeong-Sijo and Saseol-Sijo were compared to each other focusing on the elements, including Saseol, Baeja, melody and Sigimsae. Based on such analysis, the musical characteristics of Sijo by region have been identified as below. First, in case of notation method applied in Sijobo by region, Gyeongje and Yeongje (Hyang-kyo Kim) and Seokamje’s 『Aakbo』 used Jeongganbo, while the Lower Naepoje among other Naepoje used melodical notes composed of numbers. In the Upper Naepoje, melodical contours were added to staff notation while tones were marked with numbers based on the tune and oral sound of Sanjo Gayaguem. In Yeongje (Ki-reung Lee, Young-do Kim), pitches, sound waves and vocalizations were marked on Chilsunbo, a notation with seven horizontal lines, by using dots and lines, but as the scores were difficult for interpretation, Hyang-kyo Kim, a pupil of Ki-reung Lee, amended them into Jeongganbo. Second, among Sijobo of the masters from each region, Female Joong Jireum-Sijo is only found at Gyeongje. While, Female Jireum Saseol-Sijo, Gutgeori-Sijo and On Jerum-Sijo can be found at the earlier scores of Seokam, currently, they do not appear at 『Su Jeong Ju Hae Melodical Contour Sijobo (修正註解 旋律線 時調譜)』 used in Wanje and Seokamje. Looking into Sijobo from each region, it is found that not only Sijo from its own region, but also those from other region were included. Particularly, Naepoje and Wanje share each other’s pieces. Considering that one region’s Sijobo include those of other region’s, it can be concluded that masters had interests in Sijo from other region as well and attempted to pass them down. Third, while most of the Saseol of Pyeong-Sijo and Saseol-Sijo by region were similar, there were differences found in Saseol-Sijo even in the same musical pieces though they were minor and overall contexts were consistent. In terms of Baeja, the letters in Pyeong-Sijo were composed tightly in the former and loosely in the latter part of a foot in most cases, and they differed depending on the number of letters and foots and by region and vocal. In Saseol-Sijo, the number of letters and foots adhering to each beat were different by pieces while, at the same time, Saseol was further expanded in scope compared to Pyeong-Sijo. Thus, in case of 5-beat rhythm, letters were mostly organized at the first to fourth beats, but also at the fifth beat though such case was rare. Also, in case of 8-beat rhythm, letters were organized throughout the first to the eighth beat, making it difficult to detect the musical differences. Still, Gyeongje and Hyangje differed in 3-gak of the first part and in 1-gak and 2-gak of the last part while Yeongje was distinguished from other region in terms of 3-gak and 4-gak of the middle part. Also, by vocal, Naepoje (Dong-gyu So), Yeongje (Young-tae Go, Ki-reung Lee, Sook-ja Chae), and Seokamje (Sang-rae Lee, Young-jun Lee) showed Baeja that is similar to Gyeongje. Since vocals from the same region perform different Baeja, those characteristics can be attributed to individuals. However, it would be hasty to conclude that the methods of Baeja appear the same all the time as Saseol and the way the accent is applied when pausing between words may vary according to pieces. Meanwhile, Yeongje-Sijo by Sook-ja Chae can be considered to be affected by Gyeongje, as the method of Baeja is very similar to each other. Likewise, some Sijo adopted the musical characteristics of other region to develop a more complex musical composition. Fourth, the melody and Sigimsae of Pyeong-Sijo and Saseol-Sijo were mostly similar except for few partial differences. Most vocals of Pyeong-Sijo in Gyeongje expanded the vocal range to ‘㳞’. In particular, Pyeong-Sijo and Saseol-Sijo from the region appeared to use ‘南’ more frequently than other region. Futhermore, falsetto is used at the middle and the last part, which was also detected from vocals of other region, including Seokamje. Such vocal method in each region can be regarded as being affected by Gyeongje-Sijo. The existing studies explain that when Naepoje proceeds to ‘仲-黃-黃’, Dong-kyu So and Yeon-so Kim of the Lower Naepoje sing by retracting the throat and cutting off the sound while Sun-woong Park of the Upper Naepoje sings more smoothly and naturally. However, it is found that Joo-hwan Lee, Ho-sung Kim and Wol-ha Kim in Gyeongje also descends to ‘仲-黃-黃’ with strong accent, while Yeongje, in particular, shows more firm and stronger sound relative to other region. Thus, it cannot be concluded that such feature is unique only at the Lower Naepoje. Meanwhile, Sook-ja Chae in Yeongje used Chungsung, which is the sound of the upper octave, similar to Gyeongje, and while most of the vocals in Yeongje descends to ‘仲-黃’, Jong-rok Lee from relatively young generation in Yeongje proceeds to ‘仲-南-㑖-黃-黃’, which shows the shift from the former generation. It was widely believed among scholars that Chungsung is not used in Wanje, but Young-hee Kim, unlike other vocals in the same region, frequently used Chungsung, making it similar to Gyeongje. It was found that it is due to the fact that Seokamje, which was influenced by Gyeongje, made female vocal parts to be sung in falsetto. Also, Seokamje does not use Chungsung in general, but it was found to be different by pieces. Furthermore, there were differences found in tones among vocals in the same region, confirming the alterations occurring during the process of passing down. For example, Sang-rae Lee used ‘無’ while his teacher Kyung-tae Jung used ‘南’. In addition, in terms of Sigimsae, Pyeong-Sijo of all region used the middle Sigimsae, ‘仲-林-仲-黃-黃’, in the fifth beat in 3-gak·8-beat of the first part and the fifth beat in 2-gak·8-beat of the last part. Also, Saseol-Sijo used ‘仲-林-仲-太’ as Sigimsae in Gyeongje, Wanje and Seokamje. Likewise, common Sigimsae was found to be used in Pyeong-Sijo in each region while there were differences found in Sasel-Sijo by pieces, among which Wanje and Seokamje appear to be similar to each other compared to other region. Fifth, this study compares Pyeong-Sijo and Saseol-Sijo in terms of Baeja and melody to examine their stereotype and differences. As a result, Pyeong-Sijo appeared to show many alterations in Baeja in the last part relative to the first and the middle part. In case of Saseol-Sijo, many differences were found throughout the first, middle and the last part. While there were many differences in Baeja in the first and middle part of Pyeong-Sijo, depending on vocal and Saseol, 1-gak of the last part showed musical differences in a complex way by region, Saseol and vocal. In particular, the last part of Gyeongje and Naepoje largely differed from other region while the two regions showed many similarities. In terms of Saseol-Sijo, Yeongje showed many differences compared to other region, but they were meager when it compared to Gyeongje and Naepoje. Therefore, it can be interpreted that since Gyeongje, Naepoje and Yeongje and Wanje and Seokamje have many similarities, they are interrelated. Musical features and alterations developed in various ways in Saseol-Sijo, of which Saseol was expanded, according to several elements. The biggest difference in the melody of Pyeong-Sijo by region found to be appearing from the fourth to the fifth beat in 2-gak·8-beat of the middle part and from the first to the third beat in 1-gak·5-beat of the last part. While Gyeongje and Seokamje used Chungsung, ‘潢’ or ‘潢-汰’, other region did not use the melody of ‘仲’ or ‘林-仲’ as Chungsung. Singing ‘潢’ as falsetto in Sijo, which is the distinct characteristic of Gyeongje-Sijo, can be also found at Seokamje. This is due to the fact that Kyung-tae Jung has been influenced by Gyeongje when he performed Seokamje. In addition, while most of the fourth beat in 1-gak·5-beat of the first part of Pyeong-Sijo descends to ‘仲-黃’, Yeongje ascended to ‘㑣-黃’ along with various other features. Besides that, Gyeongje and Yeongje were similar in 1-gak and 5-gak of the middle part while Gyeongje, Naepoje and Yeongje were all similar to each other in some other parts, and Naepoje, Yeongje and Wanje were similar at the last part. Therefore, all region share most of the features besides the stark difference between Gyeongje and Seokamje and other region that the former two region use falsetto but the latter do not in Pyeong-Sijo. In Saseol-Sijo, similar to Pyeong-Sijo, Gyeongje, Wanje and Seokamje used Chungsung at the first beat in 1-gak·5-beat of the last part, which is not found in other region. Apart from the use of Chungsung, Wanje and Seokamje and Gyeongje, Naepoje and Yeongje are respectively similar in their melody. In case of Sigimsae in Pyeong-Sijo, all region used the middle Sigimsae of ‘仲-林-仲-黃-黃’ at the fifth beat in 3-gak·8-beat of the first part and the fifth beat in 2-gak·8-beat of the last part, which is the feature of Sigimsae in Pyeong-Sijo of each region. Similarly, Saseol-Sijo also used the middle Sigimsae ‘仲-林-仲-太’ at the third beat of 3-gak·8-beat of the first part and at the third beat in 2-gak·8-beat of the last part in Gyeongje, Wanje and Seokamje. In particular, Gyeongje used such Sigimsae twice while Wanje and Seokamje repeatedly used the back Sigimsae of ‘仲-南’. Also, Gyeongje used ‘仲-黃’ as the back Sigimsae at the third beat in 2-gak·8-beat of the first part, which is not common in other region. However, since not all piece of Sijo from every region has been analyzed in comparison, it would be difficult to conclude that such musical characteristic is unique only in Saseol-Sijo in Gyeongje.
Likewise, it is found that Sijo from most region share similar musical characteristics, especially in the use of falsetto in Gyeongje and Seokamje. When comparing between Gyeongje and Hyangje, the existing studies put significant focus on whether falsetto is used or not. However, Hyangje is found to be similar to Gyeongje in terms of using Chungsung or ‘南’ by the vocals in Naepoje and Yeongje. Meanwhile, examining the similarities among each region, it is found that Wanje from Jeolla Province, where Seokam was developed most actively, showed a large similarity with Seokamje, while musical similarities were also found with Naepoje, which has been influenced by Seokamje. In other words, due to the influence of Seokam, Sijo from difference region have integrated centering on the musical similarities in a short period of time. Further, not much difference is detected in Sijo as it has little dependent variables compared to other genre. Nevertheless, it is found that complex differences occur by region, individual and Saseol.
