This study investigated the detailed fundamental plan and design overview, the current status of routes, nature exploration resources, program operations and users, and usage patterns of the barrier-free trail of Gwanak-san(Mt.). Based on the analysis, contents and programs for nature exploration interpretation considering the characteristics of users and natural resources around the barrier-free trail were suggested. As a result of studying the existing design plan, it was revealed that the concept was “Trail of Hope” of Gwanak-san(Mt.) that helps overcome obstacles and provides the opportunity for hope. For the installation of facilities, universal design was applied in making the deck road, plaza, observatory, signboards, etc. A total of 1.3㎞-long deck road for exploration was built. It consists of an 800m-long circulation eco trail and a 500m-long slope eco trail that is connected to the deck observatory. The analysis of the existing vegetation revealed that natural forests accounted for 61.9%, artificial forests 29.9%, other plantation forests 2.3%, and other exploration facilities 5.9%. The natural forests were mostly composed of Quercus acutissima forest, Quercus mongolica forest, and Pinus densiflora forest, while artificial forests consisted of Robinia pseudoacacia forest, Pinus rigida forest, and Pinus koraiensis forest. The natural resources around the deck road were investigated into a total of 5 types: plant, environment, ecosystem resources, geological and landscape resources. As a result, there were 67 nature exploration resources including 54 circulation eco trails and 13 slope eco trails. As for wild birds, 14 kinds of resident birds such as great tits, woodpeckers, Eurasian nuthatches were observed, and a total of 12 view points were identified for landscape resources. The analysis of the current operational status of the obstacle-free forest trail programs revealed that the frequency of program operations, the number of participants, and the types of programs had mostly been reduced. Event programs that were mainly focused on walking were operated in recent years. The analysis of the characteristics of users showed that most of them were in their 50s and 60s and that about 50% of the users of the major trails used the barrier-free trail. Most users walked along the deck road, got some rest in rest facilities, observed nature at the circulation deck, and observed landscape at the slope deck. The nature interpretation contents were developed using natural resources by differentiating according to users and the characteristics of the eco trails. The class of targets for the exploration programs was divided into teenagers and students, adults and the elderly, and the disabled. The contents for the nature exploration program were developed for each class: scientific interpretation on the nature and ecosystem for teenagers and students, resources interpretation on culture for adults and the elderly, and experience contents on plants using the five senses such as scent for the disabled. After reviewing redundancy among the studied resources, the contents were suggested for a total of 46 sites including 38 circulation eco trails and 8 slope eco trails. As for programs using the developed contents, programs centering on the observation of forest ecosystem of Gwanak-san(Mt.) were suggested for teenagers and students, programs mostly related to forest culture and plant utilization for adults and the elderly, and sensory experience programs for the disabled. When it comes to facilities such as interpretation signs to support exploration, making 3-dimensional interpretation signs instead of existing 2-dimensional boards was suggested.
