The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of work-family conflict on the relationship between gender role attitudes and life satisfaction among the dual earner couples with children. For this purpose, the data was collected from 232 dual-earner couples with children in Seoul, Goyang, Uijeongbu, Pocheon, Yangju, Cheongju and Eumseong area and measured by Gender Role Attitudes Scale, Multidimensional Measure of Work-Family Conflict and Korean version of the Satisfaction with the Life Scale(K-SWLS). The data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 21.0 and Mplus 6.0. The descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, evaluation of structural equation modeling test were performed. The results of this study were as follows.
First, husband's gender role attitudes showed a significant positive correlation with work-family conflict of husband and wife, and showed a significant negative correlation with life satisfaction of husband and wife. Second, we verified both husband and wife showed relevant actor effect in the path: mediation variable → dependent variable. And wife showed relevant partner effect in the path: independent variable → dependent variable. And husband showed relevant partner effect in the path: independent in the work-family conflict model, the work-family interference model and the family-work interference model. Third, the husband's gender role attitudes seemed to affect the wife's life satisfaction more than the wife's gender role attitude did. And husband's life satisfaction was influenced more by husband's gender role attitudes mediated husband's work-family conflict. Fourth, husband showed actor effect-where work-family conflict( the work-family interference and the family-work interference) fully mediates between gender role attitudes and life satisfaction in the work-family conflict model, the work-family interference model and the family-work interference model.
These findings proved that husband's conservative gender role attitudes are variable that effect life satisfaction of husband and wife. Finally, the implications, limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies were discussed.
