In this work, different kinds of oxide phosphors doped with rare earth, post-transition metal and co-doped with transition metal were prepared by solution combustion and sol-gel methods. The selection of the hosts and dopants were optimized to meet the specific requirements for practical applications in the field of optoelectronics. The prepared phosphor powders were investigated by many techniques in order to apply appropriate conditions for enhancing the properties of the phosphors. A detailed investigation on rare earth, post-transition metal and co-doped with transition metal doped oxide phosphors has been undertaken using spectroscopic methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX), optical absorption, photoluminescence, electron spin resonance (ESR), and thermoluminescence (TL) studies. We identified the kinds of defects formed by gamma irradiation in the sample and examined their roles in the TL glow peaks. In addition, we took a step forward by using ESR spectroscopy to understand the role and type of defects responsible for thermoluminescence in prepared phosphors. The phosphor coating in devices is continuously hit by ionizing radiations in order to convert to visible light output and in such a situation, the formation of defect centers can be expected. In this respect, a study of radiation induced defects and knowledge about the type of defects are of a great practical importance. Gadolinium activated ultraviolet emitting ZrO2 phosphor was prepared using combustion synthesis. All reflections of ZrO2:Gd could be indexed to those of standard monoclinic ZrO2 (JCPDS No. 83–0944). The UVB emission resulting from the 6P7/2→8S7/2 transition of Gd3+ was observed at 313 nm. The narrow UVB peak centered at 314 nm making it a possible phosphor for application in phototherapy lamp. Further, orange emitting perovskites SrZrO3:Sm3+ phosphors were also successfully synthesized using a sol-gel method. Under the 406 nm excitation, the three Sm3+-emission transitions 4G5/2→6H5/2 (562 nm), 4G5/2→6H7/2 (599 nm), and 4G5/2→6H9/2 (644 nm) were observed for all the samples. 0.03 mol of the Sm3+ has been suggested as the ideal contents for a brighter orange-emitting performance at 599 nm. The CIE-chromaticity color coordinates of the Sm3+-doped SrZrO3 indicate that the prepared phosphors may act as an orange-emitting-light converter for the white LED. Phosphor CaAl12O19 doped with holmium was synthesized by the low temperature solution combustion method. Excitation spectrum was mostly located around 420-500 nm, consistent with the emission wavelength of the blue LED chip, which suggests a potential blue exciting phosphor. The PL results reveal that the synthesized phosphor may play an important role in making the green producing phosphor for display applications and light emitting diodes. ESR studies were carried out to study the defect centers induced in CaAl12O19:Ho phosphor by gamma irradiation and also to identify the centers responsible for the TL process. Further, Li2SiO3:Sm phosphor material was synthesized by the solution combustion method. Li2SiO3:Sm exhibits thermoluminescence (TL) peaks at approximately 140oC, 155oC, 190oC, 250oC and 405oC. Three defect centers contribute to the observed ESR spectrum. The PL study confirms the presence of dopant Sm3+ and the sharp peaks are ascribed to the f-f transition of Sm3+ ions. Among these transitions the most intense transition is observed at 402 nm that corresponds to 6H5/2→4F7/2 transition. This result clearly indicates that prepared phosphor can be efficiently excited with near-ultraviolet light emitting diodes (375-405 nm). Strong blue-green light emitting MgSrAl10O17:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor was synthesized using a rapid, simple and one-step economical viable combustion method. The absorption spectrum exhibits bands due to Eu2+, Mn2+ and host lattice excitation. The energy is transferred between Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions. From the method of energy transfer, it can be predicted that this phosphor can act as a potential candidate of single phased white light emitting phosphor for UVLEDs. The site symmetry of Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions in MgSrAl10O17 were investigated by EPR measurements at different temperatures. The number of spins participating in resonance (N) and the susceptibility (c) for the resonance signal at g = 1.97 have been calculated as a function of temperature. The main advantage of determining the spin susceptibility from EPR spectra is the exclusion of diamagnetic contribution which is not possible in a static measurement. Further, to investigate the effect of doping, a series of Pb2+-doped SrZrO3 phosphors with a varying Pb2+ concentration has been successfully synthesized using the sol-gel method. The XRD patterns reveal that the phosphor consists a single-phase cubic-crystal structure with the Pm3m space group. The PL study revealed a broad-emission spectral line with the maximum at 360 nm when it was excited under 278 nm. The optimized Pb2+ concentration is 0.015 mol and beyond this concentration quenching occurred. Pure SrZrO3 exhibits an axially symmetric ESR line with g||=1.93 and g⊥ =1.99. A defect center has been observed in pure SrZrO3 and also in Pb2+ doped phosphor. The center is tentatively assigned to a Zr3+ ion. The preliminary studies indicate that synthesized phosphors can be used for the imaging devices application.
