The purpose of this study is to systematically objectify and understand in depth who TV broadcasting sports commentators are and what changes they show. Sports commentators who had worked on the three major cable channels of KBS, MBC and SBS in 2002, 2010 and 2018, set up 160 people and conducted in-depth interviews with people in related positions and experts along with quantitative content analysis. First, the content analysis aimed at identifying the general characteristics of sports commentators attempted quantitative analysis through certain analysis nomenclature, such as gender, age, educational background, leadership experience and occupation. In addition, through in-depth interviews with sports program producers, announcers, and former and current commentators, the company wanted to identify characteristics such as qualifications of commentators, criteria for selection and status and role changes based on the characteristics of sports broadcasting programs. This is to identify the unique characteristics of the narrator as a profession and to refer to interpreting quantitative content analysis results. The results of the study are summarized below. First, men accounted for an absolute majority (91.9 percent) of all TV broadcasting sports commentators analyzed, while those in their 30s (25.6 percent) and 50s (22.5 percent) accounted for a similar proportion among those in their 40s and 48.1 percent of those in their 40s. The preference of 40-something commentators by time and broadcasting companies is becoming increasingly apparent. Second, according to the distribution of educational background among TV broadcasting sports commentators, 113, or 70.63 percent of the total, followed by 25 masters (15.62 percent), 14 Ph.D. (8.75 percent), and eight high school graduates (5 percent). In recent years, the number of highly educated people is increasing, even if they made their professional debut right after graduating from high school and turned into commentators after retirement, as well as taking master's and doctorate courses. Third, a review of the distribution by the leadership experience of commentators showed that 92 out of 160 people (57.5 percent) did not have any experience as a coach or coach, but they were working as a commentator. It was followed by 46 former coaches with 28.75 percent, followed by 22 former coaches with 13.75 percent. Fourth, we looked at the distribution of jobs (full-time jobs) of TV broadcasting commentators based on the content listed on major portal sites and others. Out of the total 160 coaches, 46 were former coaches, and 27 players (16.88 percent), 20 coaches (12.5 percent), six employees or team members (3.75 percent), five professors or teachers (3.12 percent), and 56 others (3.12 percent). Others included journalists, columnists, analysts, bloggers, jobless or former employees. The TV broadcasting sports commentator looked at through in-depth interview, a qualitative study, the following summarizes the ideal type: the debut path, the selection criteria of the broadcaster's narrator, the changing role of the narrator, and the new commentary under the digital environment. First, in the past, it was customary to make a debut as a commentator after having a leadership career such as a coach or coach, but more and more players, especially former star players, have made their debuts as a commentator right after retirement. Second, the criteria for a commentator's choice were past experience or age, but in recent years recognition and stardom have come first. Third, unlike in the past, which was limited to announcer's assistants, the status and weight of broadcasting companies have expanded to the point where winning or losing ratings among broadcasting companies depends on who the commentator is. Fourth, as the digital environment where information can be searched and accessed anytime, anywhere has developed, TV sports commentators also find it difficult to survive without an ever-ending understanding and preparation of such an environment. It also needs to harmonize in front of the microphone, as it does with its partner announcer for an orchestra. Therefore, an environment that requires ‘digital multiplayer commentators’ is being developed, such as thorough pre-information collection, data analysis, and the ability to speak the proper language.
