This study investigated the relationship between PBL, one of the learner-focused learning attempts, and narrative, corresponding to the cognitive process, in order to overcome the limitation of traditional education. Specifically, I analyzed PBL and narrative in terms of constructivism, learning styles, and education effect. Based on those analyses, PBL was subsequently reconstructed in a narrative viewpoint.
The purpose of this study was to reconstruct the PBL model based on a narrative approach. I intended to reinforce the narrative thoughts of the instructor and the learner, and to achieve educational purposes emphasized by narrative and the PBL. Therefore, I examined the following research questions: First, what is the relationship between PBL and narrative? Second, how is narrative, the center of the PBL, processed? Third, how are the narratives of instructors (who guides the problem-based learning) applied to each stage? Based on the results, I addressed each research question and subsequently discussed the implications and limitations of reconstructing the PBL model with the narratives.
For the first research question, I examined the concepts of narrative and PBL. The results suggested the close relationship between the two concepts. Specifically, both narrative and PBL were presented as alternatives to traditional education. Furthermore, they both used (learner’s) experience in the aspect of learning style, and the interaction with the world in the aspect of education effect.
For addressing the second research question, we analyzed narrative relevance levels of educational participants depending on each stage of PBL. The common components of PBL were extracted based on the definition of the PBL stages and composed of 5 levels. the relationship between narrative and each stage of PBL was determined by how instructor, individual learner, and group learner lead the class. I intended to conceptualize those relationships as narrative flows central to each stage, and reconstructed the PBL model by focusing on where the narrative is focused. This nPBL model(Narrative based PBL) means PBL model based on narrative.
Although there are various ways to apply narratives in PBL, I designed a method to maximize narratives by paying attention to the points where the narrative is focused during a class. It could be valid to present three different approaches of narratives mentioned in the background section when I discuss the definition of the narrative in this study. However, I decided to discuss three approaches in a integrated manner which is a unique feature and at the same time a limitation of this study.
Afterward, for investigating the third research question, the PBL model was analyzed and then reconstructed by each stage. The most critical behavior in the first stage could be how the instructor presents problems to the learner. In PBL, a problem is perceived as the starting point of learning and influences the whole class.
Since developing PBL problems is more important than any other steps, the instructor should develop those in a very deliberate way with keeping various criteria in mind. Accordingly, this study created the requirements applied to PBL problem development by focusing on the characteristics of problems in PBL and narrative methods.
The second stage is to identify problems and plan on problem-solving. In this stage, the importance of the learner’s narrative increases. Particularly, there are more group activities rather than individual activities, which enables individual learners to communicate with the world by interacting with other people. The narrative perspective was applied in this stage, focusing on the interactions and consensus processes between the learner and the group. Given that this stage consists of many group activities, I attempted to give the questioner role to individuals, in addition to various roles such as leader, clerk, and speaker.
Stage 3 is to collect data for problem-solving. In this stage, learners collect data individually, according to the plans set in the group activity in stage 2. The narratives in this stage function as a perception tool of the individual learner and let learners collect data. At this time, the role of questioner set in stage 2 is assigned to an individual learner, and this enables the narrative to be effectively implemented. The learner can proceed with data collection while continually asking himself questions. Through this cognitive process, the learner can communicate with himself and simultaneously put himself in the context.
Stage 4 is to make results in each group. In this stage, learners integrate the processes that have been carried out in the previous stages. In this stage, the role of the moderator, as well as the questioner, is necessary. Besides, positive approach is needed to draw up consensus in the process of exchanging opinions which might have some conflicts.
Stage 5 is to present and evaluate results. In this stage, individual activities are more significant than group activities. Since individual learners compare the solutions of their own group to those of other groups, the narrative generated by an individual is more important than the narrative produced by interactions within a group. Learners can evaluate solutions by themselves as a questioner. For instance, they can take a look at each stage and think about improvements and shortcoming of learning and changes in recognition processes.
The implications of this study are as follows. First, the results suggest that the meaning of the research examining the relationship between PBL and narrative allows learners to practice their lives. The ultimate goal of PBL and narrative, and furthermore education, would be encouraging learners to lead their own lives. Second, the PBL and narrative need to function as alternatives to traditional education that emphasizes efficiency and standardized classes. In particular, PBL may not be reasonable in Korea’s education system that focuses only on college entrance exams. Nevertheless, since the limitations of the traditional education system are continuously pointed out, PBL and narrative need to function as alternatives and subsequently promote the learner’s adaptive growth. Third, education needs to encourage the growth of both teachers(instructors) and learners by applying narrative. Regarding PBL, although the learner has a great amount of control over the lesson, there are still involvements of the instructor. Therefore, strengthening the narratives of both the instructor and the learner is essential to improve the instructor’s professionalism and the learner’s self-directed problem-solving.
The desired effects of this model in the study are as follows. First, the model helps us intrinsically approach to the ultimate goal of PBL within the educational curriculum. Second, the model allows students to function as active participants by associating education with their own lives. Third, the model guides teaching directions for instructors by presenting narrative-related expressions at each stage of the PBL.
Currently, education which emphasizes on efficiency, and class curriculum is teacher-centered and standardized. The paradigm of a class needs to be changed to develop students’ competencies fundamental in this fast-changing society. From this perspective, this study has implications on helping learners look back their previous lives, organize their present lives, and prepare their future lives.
