Many research efforts have been devoted for decades to the development of polymeric materials with self-healing properties, which is the capacity to heal damages without human intervention, for applications as coating, rubbers, plastics, and composites. The introduction of the self-healing property into polymeric materials provides a significant increase of their sustainability and represents a great advantage in terms of environmental and economic aspects. The self-healing capability can be introduced into polymeric materials by using extrinsic or intrinsic methods. Generally, the intrinsic method is the preferred option because it allows not only versatile molecular design based on the service environment and self-healing condition but also to implement repetitive self-healing properties. Especially, the introduction of reversible dynamic covalent bonds undergoing exchange reactions by specific stimulus is considered the most common and powerful intrinsic method for the preparation of self-healing polymeric materials. Recently, self-healable polyurethane (PU) has attracted the attention of many researchers as a new generation of material due to its potential applicability and versatility in various fields such as foams, coatings, adhesives, and elastomers, which has led to extensive studies on numerous self-healing PUs containing various dynamic covalent bonds. However, since such bonds are generally very weak, their introduction significantly degrades the mechanical and thermal properties of PU, hindering its practical application in industries. On the basis of this background, this thesis explores the use of polyhydroxyurethanes (PHUs) with excellent mechanical and self-healing properties as robust self-healing PU systems. The PHUs were prepared from a glycerol carbonate (GC)-capped polyurethane (PU) prepolymer and an amine chain extender. The resulting GC-based polyhydroxyurethane (GPU) showed excellent mechanical and self-healing properties compared with a control PU (CPU) without free hydroxyl groups in the polymer chain. The robust mechanical properties and excellent self-healing properties of GPU were attributed to the hydroxyurethane groups forming strong hydrogen bonding and facilitating exchange reactions between the GPU chains. The self-healing efficiencies of GPU and CPU were determined to be 92% and 42% under external heating, respectively. Rheological studies on GPU and CPU were also conducted, revealing that the exchange reaction of hydroxyurethane groups between the GPU molecules resulted in negative normal stress difference (N1) and cross-over between storage (Gʹ) and loss (G″) modulus values. These rheological results are important findings that provide essential information involving the extrusion and injection of self-healing PU elastomers, including intrinsic self-healing mechanisms by exchange reactions. A self-healable polyhydroxyurethane (S-PU) was also synthesized following a simple method that involved the use of sorbitol, a biomaterial, as a chain extender for the preparation of the PU prepolymer. In the synthesis step, only the two primary alcohol groups of sorbitol were considered as reactive sites for the reaction with the isocyanate groups of polyurethane prepolymers, to ensure the presence of free hydroxyl groups in S-PU after the chain extension reaction. Meanwhile, a control sample (H-PU) was synthesized via a conventional method by using hexane diol as a chain extender. Compared with H-PU, S-PU showed much faster stress relaxation behavior and much better self-healing properties, most likely due to the nucleophilic addition reaction of the free hydroxyl groups of S-PU facilitating the fast exchange reaction of the hydroxyurethane groups in the absence of a catalyst. Furthermore, S-PU exhibited much higher tensile strength than H-PU because the presence of free hydroxyl groups enhances the hydrogen bonding. Cross-linked polyhydroxyurethane networks (PUNs) showing excellent self-healing, recycling, and shape memory properties via dual-exchange reaction of disulfide and hydroxyurethane groups were investigated employing a disulfide-containing tetraol (GA) as a cross-linker for the preparation of PU prepolymers. The cross-linker GA was prepared by the simple reaction between 1 mol of 4-aminophenyldisuflide and 2 mol of glycerol carbonate. Only three of the four hydroxyl groups of GA were intended to participate in the cross-linking reaction with the PU prepolymer. The remaining free hydroxyl groups in PUN were expected to accelerate the hydroxy urethane exchange reaction via nucleophilic addition to the carbamate units. Furthermore, since disulfide linkages can easily undergo metathesis reaction under mild temperature or UV irradiation, the PUN cross-linked with GA (GA-PUN) showed not only excellent dual-responsive self-healing properties by heat or UV irradiation but also superior recycling properties based on the synergistic effect of activated dual-exchange reaction at high temperature. It was also found that GA-PUN showed excellent shape memory properties. Due to the dynamic hydroxyurethane groups in PHU, PHUs exhibited excellent self-healing and mechanical properties, excellent recycling properties, and shape memory properties. It is postulated that various PHUs with superior self-healing and recycling properties may find a wide range of applications as coatings, adhesives, elastomers, and polymer composites.
