As a representative of the southern house of China, Huizhou traditional house is a kind of " Courtyard type " in Gangnam area of China, It forms a significant regional characteristic and unique residence culture while inheriting the traditional confucian culture ideology of China, and occupies an important position in the history of Chinese architecture and residence. On January 1th 2000, Xidi Village and Hongcun Village of Huizhou traditional house have been admitted on the World Heritage List. For more than 60 years from 1950s to now, scholars at home and abroad have studied Huizhou Village and traditional house from multi-angle and multi-level. Those external observations and descriptive studies were certainly an essential part of recognizing the traditional house of Huizhou, although those research were valuable, in order to understand the essential characteristics of Huizhou architecture, it was also very important to study the spatial construction and plane configuration within the interior of a house. In this study, 15 traditional villages of Yixian, Shexian, Wuyuan xian in Huizhou area were selected as the research object to understand the classification of plane type and the mechanism of plane composition of traditional house, and we could explore the differences of physical characteristics between different type of residential plane and the physical change that occur in the unit space of residential plane. For this purpose, based on the on-site investigation of 15 villages in Yixian, Shexian, Wuyuan xianin of Huizhou. This paper analyzed the actually measured and prepared of plans of 86 traditional house. Then, combined with the qualitative analysis of type of form and quantitative analysis of mathematical statistics, the plane and physical characteristics of main building of Huizhou traditional house were analyzed from three aspects of typology and geometry and topology. The results were summarized as follows. 1.Type of Huizhou traditional house Based on field investigation, this paper puts forward the space composition system of Huizhou traditional house, which was " JIN- Basic living Unit-Main Building ". By analyzing the 86 cases, this paper discusses the applicability of space composition system and the feasibility of residential plane. According to the distribution characteristics of the main building plane, 30% present basic type of triple courtyard, accounting for the majority. For the consisting of JIN number, there were 78 buildings in "1 JIN type" and "2 JIN type", accounting for 91% of all. According to the distribution characteristics of basic living unit, among the 106 confirmed units, 37(35%) were the basic type of quadrangle, while the original units were mostly distributed according to the main building type. For the distribution proportion of JIN types, among the 136 confirmed JIN types, "ㄷ" type account for 49%, "ㅁ" type account for 53 (39%), and "역ㄷ" type account for 16 (12%). 2. Difference in the type of Huizhou traditional house’s plane characteristics (1)Difference in the type of main building In terms of scale characteristics, there were high statistical difference among the main building types in all scale characteristic indicators(Depth, Overall width, DW ratio, Area)(p<0.01). Among them, there was a statistical difference between column 1 and column 2 of main building, however, there was no statistical difference among the column 1. The integration of indicators of spatial structure characteristics aspects also showed a high statistical difference between main building types(p<0.01). The mean of integration were shown that the highest variable was the basic types of quadrangle, and the lowest variable was the type of longitudinal combination. the number of JIN of main plane was highly correlated to the area of main plane,(Relation number 0.742)(p<0.01). But, it has been shown that the number of JIN of the main plane has a high inverse correlation with the integration of main plane(Relation number -0.722) (p<0.01). (2)Difference in the type of basic living unit In terms of scale characteristics, there was high statistical difference between other basic living units with the indicators of Depth, DWratio and Area, except for basic type of quadrangle(p<0.01). In terms of spatial structure characteristics, the integration of basic living unit shows a high statistical difference(p<0.01). The mean of integration was shown that the highest variable was the basic type of quadrangle, and the lowest variable was the anti-type of triple courtyard. (3) Difference in the type of JIN In terms of scale characteristics, there were high statistical difference among three types of JIN("ㄷ" type, "anti-ㄷ" type, "ㅁ" type) in scale characteristics indicators(Depth, DW ratio, Area), except for Width indicator. The mean was shown as "ㅁ" type > "ㄷ" type > "anti-ㄷ" type.
