The purpose of this study is to examine effects of physical activities on toddlers' motor skills and playfulness by their age and provide data for enhance them. For the purpose, following questions were raised: 1. What effects do physical activities have on motor skills by toddlers' age? 2. What effects do physical activities have on playfulness by toddlers' age? A total of 80 1and 2 years old toddlers registered in child care centers located in Chuncheongnam-do were selected as the subjects. Each half (n=40) of them was equally allotted to two groups: experiment group consisting of 1 year old boys (n=10) and girls (n=10), 2 years old boys (n=10) and girls (n=10) and the comparison group of 1 year old boys (n=10) and girls (n=10), 2 years old boys (n=11) and girls (n=9). The experiment group performed physical activities for 30 minutes at a session, two sessions a week, during 8 weeks, while the comparison group performed physical activities by life themes of the standard childcare process for 30 minutes at a session, two sessions a week, during 8 weeks. For this study, a tool derived from Fundamental Movement Skill Test developed by Werder and Bruininks (1988) and corrected and complemented to be suitable for toddlers by Lee Mingyeong (2008) was used to toddlers' motor skills, while an another tool originated from Children's Playfulness Scale created by Barnett (1991), adapted by Yu Aeyeol (1994) and corrected and complemented to be suitable for toddlers' developmental level by Yun Sangin (2010) was used to measure their playfulness. A pre-test and post-test of motor skills and playfulness of toddlers in the experiment and the comparison group, and physical activities of them in the experiment group was conducted. For the data analysis, the estimation of Crombach's α as reliability coefficient, t-test to verify the homogeneity of the score of the pre-test between groups, the estimation of the average and standard deviation derived from the pre- and post test and ANCOVA analysis with the covariates being the scores of the pre-test were implemented by using SPSS 21.0. An analysis of the effects of physical activities on motor skills and playfulness shows by toddlers' age: First, an analysis on the effects of physical activities on motor skills by toddlers' age exhibits that there were statistically more significant differences in sub-factors such as non-moving, moving and control motor in the experiment group, than those in the comparison group. In addition, there was a significant difference in moving motor between 1 and 2 years old toddlers and the latter's moving motor skills are better than those of the former, in both groups. There were significant differences in all motor skills, and toddlers' motor skills in the experiment group were more enhanced, than those in the comparison group. Second, an analysis on the effects of physical activities on playfulness by toddlers' age shows that there were statistically more significant differences in sub-factors such as physical, social and cognitive spontaneity, expression of pleasure and sense of humor in the experiment group, than those in the comparison group. In addition, there was a significant difference in social and cognitive spontaneity between 1 and 2 years old toddlers and the latter's social and cognitive spontaneity are better than those of the former, in both groups. There were significant differences in the whole playfulness, toddlers' playfulness in the experiment group were more enhanced, than those in the comparison group, and the playfulness of 2 year olds was more improved than that of 1 year olds in the experiment group. In conclusion, physical activities were found to have an effect on the enhancement of toddlers' motor skills and playfulness and significant differences in them occur by age. This study clarified positive effects of physical activities on motor skills and playfulness, by toddlers' age. It suggests that systematic physical activities planned for toddlers' developmental stages, provided by toddler care centers are effective in enhancing their motor skills and playfulness.
