The objective of this study was to examine the effect of mobile game sounds on game user’s game preference. For this, this study looked into literature and preceding studies on mobile games, sounds and game preferences, worked out a questionnaire based on the results of examination, and then asked three specialists to test the validity of questionnaire, thus confirming the appropriateness of questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 62 items worked out using the method of parallel/simultaneous mixed method designs, thus making quantitative and qualitative data mutually supplementing. Study subjects were 40 people who were younger than 30 years of age and they were sampled randomly. And then they practiced ‘Friends Pop’, a game of which rate of use for the last two years was highest, and then they filled out the questionnaire by stages. Study findings are as follows: First, regarding user’s game preference according to the effect of sounds by stages, their preference was highest when all the sounds were placed simultaneously, and it was followed by ‘when there was an effect sound only,’ ‘when there was music alone,’ and ‘when there was no sound’, in diminishing order. If the roles of sound in preceding studies were sufficiently satisfied, game user’s preference were increased. In addition, since four groups of sound effects presented statistically significant results, experience in music seemed to have great effect on the preference of music. Second, the effect of sound by stages according to the difference of difficulty of games had no significant effect on user’s preference of games. This finding was different from preceding study’s optimum-complexity theory. This result seemed to derive from the fact that a variety of factors functioned, such as psychological factors and physical factors. Third, user’s responses to the sound of games were consistent with preceding studies in general, thus supporting the validity of this study. Based on the above study findings, this study could understand the relationship among mobile games, sounds and game preferences, and then presented issues for follow-up studies. The author hopes study findings will provide help to people who carry out researches on the sound of games and want to develop games.
