Non-replica 라이선스 뮤지컬의 Local production 과정에서의 프로듀서 역할 연구 : 뮤지컬 를 중심으로 A study on the role of the producer in the local production process of non-replica licensed musicals: with a focus on musical 원문보기

The contemporary era is often called the era of entertainment. According to the “survey on enjoyment of culture in 2018”, the average annual viewing rate of culture or art events was 81.5%, which was a 19.1%p increase from the 62.4% in 2003. Of the respondents, 87.0% said they had an intention to attend a culture or art event in the next year. This indicates that there is an increased demand for culture and arts as the economy grows and the people’s experience in culture, art and related education improves. In particular, musicals take up a major portion of performing arts these days. A well-made musical can bring in enormous revenues globally and have an economic ripple effect. The musical Lion King, as of 2017, drew in 7.9 billion dollars from ticket revenues or 8.5 trillion Won. The Phantom of the Opera brought in 5.6 dollars or approximately 6 trillion Won. The market demand for musicals in Korea, too, is immense. The Korean market for musicals has seen rapid growth since 2001. However, creative works were not able to lead the market due to the inferior and overheated production environment, small consumer market and lack of professional creative infrastructure or content. Instead, licensed musicals have led the revenues and growth in the market. This is a global phenomenon. Given the nature of musicals that are intangible resources and have a high ticket price structure, the audience tend to concentrate on well-known works or those that have stars appear. Leading examples of successful musicals are Jekyll & Hyde, The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Les Miserables, Mamma Mia! Wicked, Elisabeth, Billy Elliot, Lion King, Chicago, and Man of La mancha. These works have been performed in Korea through licensed performances after becoming famous on Broadway or the West End. Licensed musicals set themselves apart from non-replica musicals. Replica musicals do not allow changes by a Korean producer. The Phantom of the Opera and Lion King were such examples. Non-replica musicals allow Korean production staff to recreate the work by signing contract with the copyright holder on just the script and rights to perform the music. Jekyll & Hyde, and Elisabeth are such examples. Even big hits on Broadway that were brought in via licensing can often be a flop if the story does not resonate with the Korean audience. During the process of localization, there needs to be a strategy applied to bring it to success. One of the best examples of success in licensed musicals having localized is Jekyll & Hyde. Since its first performance in 2004, it has broken almost all records in the history of performing arts in Korea. The best musical actors such as Seungwu Cho, Jeonghan Ryu, Gwangho Hong, Euntae Park and Sohyeon Kim offered a wide range of choice to the audience and boosted the quality of performing arts in Korea. In addition, all shows received standing ovations and there was heated competition over tickets. The highest ticket sales were recorded in Korean history and the genre of thriller musicals became well established through this piece. Musical Jekyll & Hyde is based on the horror novel by Robert Stephenson. Composer Frank Wildhone created the music to showcase it on Broadway in 1997. But it did not receive a lot of attention in the U.S. Once it came to the Korean market in 2004 though, it broke all records in the box office for 15 years. As such, the popularity and success of the work can not be entirely contributed to the originality of the work or musical composition. The creative revisions and upgrading that took place while it was brought to Korea made the work attractive enough to surprise the original production team and staff. It was the long-term strategies in units of 10 years and the focus on upgrading and sophistication that led to such success for 15 years. Ever since the stage of developing the license, the producer opted for a strategy to make the work more sophisticated and Koreanized. Hiring a Broadway producer to bring out the feel of the Victorian times and the Western world in 18th centry greatly boosted the originality and finishing aspects of the work. The high-end but toned down stage sets and costumes, the live music performed by a 20 member orchestra and the heart-warming melody all came together to leave a deep impression on the audience. In addition, through the non-replica license contract method a re-production method was adopted where the Korean producing team could re-structure the work. It led to the work being reborn to better cater to Korean tastes. The producer took into account the Korean psyche and temperament to drastically change the script and music and established a production team and planning and marketing team with the best in the field in Korea to completely change the original into a licensed musical with a great reputation and artistic value. The differentiated planning strategy opted by the producer focused mostly on the casting of stars and the selection of theaters. In doing so, the producer was able to quickly establish the brand of the work and achieve a high awareness. By adopting a strategy to update the work to a premium work and foray into international markets, the producer was able to position Jekyll & Hyde as one of the best premium musicals at home and abroad. In addition, the catchphrases used to promote the work included “the most beautiful thriller in the history of Broadway”, “the legend of standing ovations at all performances”, “the return of the king” and “the absolute musical”. These copy lines led to the genre of the thriller musical becoming trendy and clearly differentiated from competitive works. The Korean version of Jekyll & Hyde, a non-replica musical that has everything changed except for the basic text and musical composition, is a different musical from the original production on Broadway. It was the fruit of efforts led by the producer joining hands with Korean production and marketing partners to tap into the latest trends in the performing arts market and the Korean psyche. As a result, since the premier in 2004, musical Jekyll & Hyde created a legend in the box office for 15 years. Given such a success, it can be said as the most successful model for Koreanizing licensed musicals. To understand the practice of performance planning, it is deeply meaningful to study and review one piece of work from beginning to end in an in-depth manner. In particular, reviewing the strategies and business management methods applied to musicals such as Jekyll & Hyde that made a longer-term record in the box office and established an unprecedented status in the Korean market is well worth it in terms of discussing not only the practice of performing arts management but also of setting a special precedent in students in the field. This study is a case study on a single piece of work and in particular the musical business strategy of the producer. As such, the artistic aspects, analytical approaches to the narrative structure or comparison with other works were excluded from the discourse. The focus was placed on the planning, production and marketing of musicals following the judgment of the producer regarding the performing arts management strategy, and the results of executing such strategies. More case studies that follow up on this study to review in-depth the artistic values of performing arts would also be meaningful.
