There are high variations in water resources in Asia, which cause the frequent occurrence of natural disasters such as flood and drought. The increase in greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere will result in leading to warming, and climate change increases the variability of temporal and spatial patterns for water-related disasters. Since the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP21), which was held in Paris in December 2015, Advanced countries have been establishing the adaptation strategies to alleviate the negative impacts of anthropogenic warming based on the response to various categories under 1.5 and 2.0°C global mean temperature increases. However, to the best of our knowledge, few studies have analyzed the potential impact of 1.5 and 2°C global warming on hydrological responses in Asia. And the globally aggregated warming target does not necessarily mean that it can be universally acceptable. In this regard, it is necessary to identify the regionally emerging challenges faced by globally targeted warming. The objectives of this study are to suggest the method of the global warming impact on regional water resources change and analyze the potential changes of water resources over Asia in response to 1.5 and 2.0°C global warming above preindustrial (PI) levels. To enhance the reliability of the future projections based on a multi-model ensemble, the 5 global climate model (GCM) projections are carefully selected considering characteristics of Asia monsoon, based on the performance evaluation for the various climatic elements. The reference and two future periods that correspond to 1.5 and 2°C warming over the PI period are determined using the time sampling method. The GCM projections, after removing systematic bias using a statistical downscaling method, are fed into the hydrological model (VIC) to estimate the hydrologic responses to different levels of GHG concentrations in future periods. Changes in hydroclimatic variables are analyzed in response to different degrees of warming to examine the global warming impact on regional hydroclimate features. The results showed that the changes in temperature at the seasonal and annual scale are higher than global mean temperature due to large climate variability in Asia. Changes in seasonal mean precipitation and runoff show different temporal and spatial variability which highly depends on the GCM projections. The most consistent pattern that occurs in future projections under 1.5 and 2.0°C warming is an increase in annual precipitation and runoff. The spatial and seasonal changes in precipitation are directly transferred to runoff patterns, but the uncertainties of runoff projections are higher than those of precipitation projections. Changes in extreme events, hot extremes increase due to the temperature increasing, which lead to an increase in the vulnerability of heat waves. The robust behaviors of changes in extreme behavior of precipitation and runoff, especially in highest value tends to be amplified under 2.0°C rather than 1.5°C global warming, with potential implications for increased water stress under a much warmer climate. Increased hydroclimate intensity appears to be a result of an increase in precipitation intensity under a warmer climate. Moreover, global warming leads to changes in the distributions of daily precipitation and runoff, and the directions of the projected changes are systematic toward an enhancement at high intensity and a reduction at relatively weak intensity. These features make it difficult to manage water resources in an effective way due to an increase in extreme precipitation and runoff. A 0.5°C global warming may cause a significant impact on mean and extreme of hydroclimatic variables, especially in Tibetan plateau regions. Changes in features of hydroclimatic variables are relatively high in South Korea compared to those in East Asia, including heavy rainfall and flood risk. This study quantifies the impact of global warming on regional water resources, and the results can be effectively utilized as scientific information for adaptation to changes in climate and water resources for Asia and South Korea.
