This study aims to investigate the effects of multimedia-based information on anxiety, discomfort, and satisfaction with care among patients undergoing cerebral angiography. A nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. Fifty-five patients who underwent cerebral angiography at the neurosurgery ward in D General Hospital in B Metropolitan city were enrolled in this study, with 27 in the intervention group and 28 in the control group. Data were collected from March 21 to April 26, 2019. Anxiety was measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) developed by Spielberger (1975) and adapted for use on Koreans by Kim and Shin (1978). Discomfort was measured the Discomfort Scale developed by Lee (1995) and modified by Lee (2014) and Kang and Park (2017). Satisfaction with care was measured using Nursing Satisfaction Scale developed by Kim (2004) and modified by Kim (2011) after modifying and adapting for use on our participants. The nursing intervention in this study was providing multimedia-based information, including the concept of cerebral angiography, introduction of the cerebrovascular center and medical team, preparation before cerebral angiography, process of cerebral angiography, and precautions and aftercare following cerebral angiography. In the pre-test, information about participants’ general characteristics and anxiety were collected, and in the post-test, anxiety, discomfort, and satisfaction with care were measured on the day after the cerebral angiography. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 software. Homogeneity between the intervention and control groups was analyzed with χ²-test, Fisher’s exact test, and independent t-test, and hypothesis testing was performed using paired t-test and independent t-test. The results were as follows. Hypothesis 1: ‘The intervention group that received multimedia-based information will have a lower anxiety score than the control group that did not receive the information’ was supported (t=4.12, p<.001). Hypothesis 2: ‘The intervention group that received multimedia-based information will have a lower discomfort score than the control group that did not receive the information’ was supported (t=7.98, p<.001). Hypothesis 3: ‘The intervention group that received multimedia-based information will have a lower care satisfaction score than the control group that did not receive the information’ was supported (t=8.11, p<.001). This study confirmed that providing multimedia-based information contributes to lowering anxiety and discomfort while increasing satisfaction with care among patients undergoing cerebral angiography.
