The purpose of this study was to look into the ethical dilemmas that novice group counselors face in group counseling. For the purposes of this study, 78 novice group counselors with less than 2 years of experience as group leaders and with a Master‘s degree or higher were surveyed with an open-ended questionnaire. With the exception of 6 individuals who responded poorly or did not meet the career and educational qualifications required by the study, the data of 72 respondents were analyzed based on the CQR-M (Consensual Quantitative Research - Modified) method. The key findings of the study were as follows. A total of 5 fields, 24 categories, and 78 subcategories were derived in relation to the ethical issues that novice group counselors experience. The first field was about experiencing ethical dilemmas. The 4 categories of this field were as follows: ethical dilemmas arising from ‘the extent of the expertise and experience of the counselor’, ‘confidentiality issues’, ‘multiple relationships’, and ‘group members who were not likely to benefit from group counseling’. The second field was about coping with ethical dilemmas, from which a total of 4 categories and 22 subcategories were derived. The third field was about the ethical dilemma that was the most difficult to cope with for novice group counselors. The 5 categories of this field were as follows: ethical dilemmas arising from ‘the extent of the expertise and experience of the counselor’, ‘confidentiality issues’, ‘multiple relationships’, ‘group members who were not likely to benefit from group counseling’, and ‘the premature termination of group counseling’. The fourth field was about what novice group counselors learned through dealing with ethical dilemmas. The 5 categories of this field were as follows: ‘the necessity to undergo trial and error in the process of becoming a group counselor’, ‘the necessity for more consultations and effort for group structurization’, ‘the necessity to nurture the appropriate attitude as a group counselor’, ‘the fact that ethical dilemmas are an opportunity for growth’, and ‘the difficulty of group counseling’. The fifth field was about what was necessary to cope with ethical dilemmas. The 6 categories of this field were as follows: ‘supervision’, ‘extensive experience as group counselor’, ‘an understanding of ethical dilemmas and training for coping strategies’, ‘support and understanding from the outside’, ‘group counselor training’, and ‘well-defined criteria for group counselor qualification’. The categories that showed a 30 percent or more difference in frequency from that of the categories least responded to in the same field were as follows: in the first field (experiencing ethical dilemmas), ethical dilemmas arising from ‘the extent of the expertise and experience of the counselor’; in the fourth field (what was learned through dealing with ethical dilemmas), ‘the necessity to undergo trial and error in the process of becoming a group counselor’; and in the fifth field (what was necessary to cope with ethical dilemmas), ‘supervision’. The results showed that novice group counselors often faced difficulty dealing with frequent instances of ethical dilemmas arising from their lack of expertise and experience, and that under such situations they felt the need to learn and train more to become better group counselors. They also wanted to better address ethical issues by being supervised under such situations. The findings of this study suggest that the following measures are necessary: clear, well-defined criteria for group counselor qualification, expansion of the group counselor training to encompass novice group counselors, reforms for a more detailed and applicable code of ethics for group counseling, and a set of guidelines to help counselors cope with ethical dilemmas. It is expected that the findings of this study will be useful in increasing the ethical sensitivity of novice group counselors and serve as a basis for their ethics education.
