ABSTRACT Perception of the Risks of and Satisfaction with Semi-permanent Makeup and Utilization of Hairline Correction Treatments This study investigated the perception of the risks and satisfaction with semi-permanent makeup and utilization of hairline correction treatments and sought acquire basic data needed for related studies. For this, a questionnaire survey was conducted among a total of 482 adults aged 20-60s living in Jeolla-do, Chungcheong-do, Seoul- Gyeonggi-do, and other regions. The collected data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 24.0 and the results found the following: First, according to analysis of respondents’ general characteristics, ‘women’, ‘50s’ and ‘married’ were high. In terms of average monthly income and educational background, ‘less than KRW 3 million’ and ‘college graduates’ were most responded, respectively. When asked where they live and what they do for a living, ‘Jeolla-do’ and ‘professional job’ were high. Second, the awareness of semi-permanent makeup was a score of 3.55 on average, which means that respondents were fairly aware of the treatment. In addition, the perception of semi-permanent makeup was positive with average scores of 4.00. Third, in terms of an area subject to hairline correction treatment, ‘both ends of forehead (M-shaped hairline)’ was most responded, followed by ‘broad forehead’ and ‘top of the head’. Fourth, when asked which part they wanted to get semi-permanent hairline correction treatment, ‘both ends of forehead (M-shaped hairline)’ was the highest, followed by ‘broad forehead’, ‘top of the head’ and ‘little hair because of balding’. Fifth, risk perception prior to the semi-permanent makeup treatment was a little higher than ‘average’ with average scores of 3.31. In terms of risk perception by domain, ‘psychological risk (M=3.58)’ was the highest, followed by ‘performance/technical risk (M=3.46)’, ‘physical risk (M=3.28)’, ‘hygienic risk (M=3.20)’ and ‘economic risk (M=3.03)’. In terms of risk perception by sub-factor, ‘concerned about little treatment of skin pain (M=3.73)’ was the highest, followed by ‘concerned if the treatment is properly done as wanted (M=3.69)’, ‘concerned if my face stays symmetrical (M=3.61)’, ‘concerned if the treatment is successful with good colors and styles (M=3.39)’ ‘concerned about professional knowledge and techniques (M=3.38)’ and ‘concerned if the esthetician can display her best performances (M=3.31)’. Sixth, when asked if they were satisfied with semi-permanent makeup treatment, ‘Yes’ was responded at an average score of 4.00. In terms of the degree of satisfaction by domain, ‘economic factor (M=4.11)’ was the highest, followed by ‘social/psychological factor (M=4.10)’, ‘performance factor (M=3.94)’ ‘technical factor (M=3.92)’ and ‘physical factor (M=3.90)’. In terms of the degree of satisfaction by sub-factor, ‘helpful in saving time for makeup (M=4.23)’ was most responded, followed by ‘good communication before the treatment (M=4.13)’ ‘positive responses after the treatment (M=4.12)’, ‘high satisfaction with costs (M=4.08)’, ‘safe treatment without inconvenience (M=4.05)’ and ‘the duration of the treatment was good for various services (M=4.02)’. Seventh, in terms of correlations between risk perception before the treatment and post-treatment satisfaction, as the risk perception of semi-permanent makeup was lower, satisfaction with the treatment increased. The above results confirmed that more people have begun to realize that semi-permanent makeup is a professional field of cosmetology. In particular, the semi-permanent hairline correction treatment is a sphere which requires very elaborate skills with a broad treatment area. Therefore, safer and more effective techniques should be provided. It is anticipated that such semi-permanent hairline correction treatments are actively applied and continuously developed, helping the estheticians improve their skills and increase sales through customer creation.
