Oil paints have been diversified and subdivided along with the development of synthetic pigments, and more than 100 types of oil paints are produced and sold currently. In addition, the inorganic analysis method is mainly used for analyzing oil paints, thus this method has limitations in analyzing the paints with organic matters as its main components. The hyperspectral technology which is one of the new analysis methods is applied in order to supplement such limitations of oil paint analysis. The hyperspectral technology adds spectral information to a 2D image, and an image for each wavelength and a spectrum by pixel can be obtained at the same time. The structural analysis of a painting work and analysis of paints are carried out at the same time, and information such as the table of paint subdivision and painting techniques can be obtained from a false color image. However, numerous databases are needed to ensure sufficient reliability in the interpretation of the analysis results. Since the use of paints in paintings is not stereotyped and there can be various mixed-color methods for each painter, it is impossible to build a database considering in all cases. Therefore, it is necessary to select certain paintings and accumulate research considering the presumed color and color mixing method around the works. Through this, it is necessary to gradually secure reliability of paint analysis using hyperspectral technique. In this study, two paintings by Kim Hyung-koo(1922-2015) were selected (Hyehwa-dong Landscape, Girl's Award) and color analysis was conducted using hyperspectral technique. First, we selected a mixing methods of paints and paints that is assumed to have been used in the paintings. Subsequently the characteristics of the hyperspectral analysis data were investigated when these paints were used alone or mixed. As a result, unique specific features of each paints could be extracted using the hyperspectral spectrum and false color of the visible light area(VNIR) and the near infrared area(NIR). In addition, except for some paints, these specific features of each paints were maintained after the mixing. On the other hand, it was possible to analyze the organic pigments, Alizarin Crimson and Phthalo Blue which were difficult to analyze with other non-destructive technologies such as XRF and Raman. It was also possible to analyze cobalt(Co) series of paints and chromium(Cr) series of green paints. The results show that hyperspectral technology can be used as a way to overcome the limitations of other non-destructive analysis techniques, and it is expected that the analysis data on the paints accumulated through this research can be used as basic data for the analysis of the domestic oil paints using hyperspectral technology in the future.
