Purpose: Music plays an important role in various aspects in human life. To perceive music properly, pitch, melody, timbre and rhythm information is needed sufficiently. Even though, hearing assistive technology has been developed, the hearing-impaired still has difficulty to perceive music. A number of studies has been conducted internationally. Despite the interest of many researchers, there are not many studies in Korea and there is no test tool designed to reflect the emotion and culture of Korean. Therefore, the aims of this study were to develop the draft of Assessment of Music Perception for Hearing Loss (AMPHL) test for the Korean hearing-impaired. With this development process, we hope to make better understanding about music perception of the Korean hearing-impaired and find the ways to enhance music perception ability of them.
Method: The pilot study was conducted on 10 normal-hearing adults to select stimulus for KHIMP. In pilot study of melody perception test, the most familiar two melodies were chosen from three melodies of each music genre including folk, children’s song, K-pop, aria, classical music and TV music. In the pilot study of timbre perception test, two melodies which has low correct percentage were chosen from three instruments of each families of musical instruments including brass, woodwind, string and pitched percussion then the draft of the AMPHL was made. The pitch perception test use three representative low frequencies (226, 330, 391 Hz) and high frequencies (1047, 1319, 1568 Hz) each. Melody perception test was consisted of ‘arrirang’ and ‘Chenonan three-way intersection’ for folk, ‘baby goat’ and ‘mountain rabbit’ for children’s song, ‘red sunset glow’ and ‘sorrow’ for K-pop, ‘spring in my hometown’ and ‘land of hope’ for aria, ‘destiny symphony’ and ‘Eine kleine nachtmusik’ for classical music and ‘oronamin c’ and ‘national singing contest’ for TV music. The timbre instruments including trumpet and horn for brass, saxophone and oboe for woodwind, violin and cello for string, piano and guitar for pitched percussion. The tests was conducted on 20 people (24.4±2.96) in their 20s with 10 normal-hearing (NH) adults (23.4±1.84) and 10 cochlear-implant (CI) recipients(25.3±3.62). It has efficiency as computerized using tablet PC.
Result: All music perception test showed significant differences between NH and CI group. Pitch perception test showed CI group has better perception in low-frequency band (59%) than high-frequency band (44%). In melody perception test, the percentage of correct answer was the highest in the folk (51.7%) belonging to low frequency band and lowest in the aria (6.7%) belonging to high frequency band. It is possible that the frequency range of melody affect the melody perception. Timbre perception test showed the highest correct answer rate in pitched percussion (72.5%) which has large fundamental frequency range and lowest in woodwind (30.8%) which has small fundamental frequency range. It is possible that the amount of fundamental frequency range affect the timbre perception.
Conclusion: In future study, the timbre perception test of AMPHL is need to be easier, because difficulty of the test was too high to evaluate properly. The various products of CI manufacturers and other hearing assistive devices can be considered for the another subtest for AMPHL. To improve music perception ability for the hearing-impaired, various CI processing algorithms should be developed by CI manufacturers and musical training should be applied to CI users. This study was the draft of AMPHL. In the future, we look forward to the complete AMPHL which take into account the emotion, culture of Korea and era.
