Cassiterite(SnO2)가 동정된 고주석 부식층 내에 입자형태의 Malachite(Cu2CO3(OH)2), Cuprite(Cu2O) 등의 구리산화물이 동정되었다.

Sinpung site in the early iron age in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do is located in the basins of the Mangyeong river. The purpose of this study is to offer scientific basis in exploring the system of bronze artifacts manufacturing technique and corrosion-redeposition mechanism. To this end, this study presumes the manufacturing techniques and corrosion characteristics of the 4 bronze tools excavated in the sinpung site: 1 bronze chisel, 1 bronze Ax, 2 bronze burins. To presume the manufacturing techniques and corrosion characteristic, this study conducts metallurgical microscope observation, the analyses of SEM-EDS, FE-EPMA and Raman Micro-Spectroscopy. According to the observation of microstructure, dendrite was observed from bronze chisel and ax. The bronze chisel and ax are observed α phase and (α+δ) phase, with no heat treatment or additional processing. For the bronze burins, δ phase is observed in the form of a grain boundary, and the (α+δ) phase and δ phase are observed in particles from the bronze burin’s microstructure. It is a possibility that heat treatment is applied through the crystal structure of α phase and the morphological characteristics of δ phase in the burin’s microstructure. The composition of 4 bronze tools is slightly different in content, but they all appear as Cu-Sn-Pb ternary alloys. Segregated lead particles were observed in the microstructure, which is thought to be due to lead containing ore. The type Ⅰ corrosion structure (‘even’ surfaces) with a dual structure consisting of an outer and an inner corrosion is observed in microstructure of 4 bronze tools. Malachite(Cu2CO3(OH)2) and Cuprite(Cu2O) in the form of particles were identified in the high tin corrosion layer in which Cassiterite(SnO2) was identified. The secondary copper is mainly observed from buried bronze artifacts’ microstructure. The secondary copper is considered to have different formation causes according to the existent aspect, but clear causes have yet to be identified. The secondary copper is mainly formed in the lead holes, which could be estimated by identifying Cuprite(Cu2O), Anglesite(PbSO4). The secondary copper is also formed in the holes created through manufacturing process, and Redeposited copper is formed at the position of the corroded eutectoid phase. In this study, objective and scientific evidences for the production technology system of ancient bronze ware and the corrosion-redeposition mechanism of excavated bronze artifacts was presented for 4 bronze tools(bronze chisel 1, bronze ax 1, bronze burin 2) excavated from sinpung site in Wanju. It will also help to understand further research and information on bronze making techniques in the future.
