Electrolytes are fundamental components in diverse electrochemical devices, including supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries, electrolyte-gated transistors, electrical skins, and electrochemical displays. Among various electrolyte types, ion gel electrolytes composed of room temperature ionic liquids and copolymers have favorable characteristics such as extremely low vapor pressure, a wide electrochemical potential window, outstanding ionic conductivity at room temperature, tunable mechanical strength, and solution processability. Therefore, they are suitable for low-voltage, flexible device applications. In particular, electrochromic devices (ECDs) capable of changing optical characteristics such as absorbance and transmittance according to an applied external voltage have attracted considerable interest due to their simple device structure, low voltage operation, and good solution processability. In this thesis, we introduce ion gel electrolytes into functional ECDs using tungsten trioxide (WO3) as EC materials. Conventional ion gels comprised of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMI][TFSI]) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-co-HFP)) were not acceptable for WO3 based ECDs, because [EMI]+ ions cannot be efficiently intercalated into the WO3 layer. Thus, we propose lithium doped ion gels using [Li][TFSI] as a lithium salt and evaluate various ECD performances based on Li-doped ion gels. Next, we successfully demonstrated electrostatic force-assisted dispensing (EFAD) printed WO3-based ECDs resulting in a voltage-tunable dual-image. The core strategies for realizing dual-image ECDs include (1) utilizing a symmetric device configuration that can be fabricated by employing electrolyte-soluble anodic species and (2) the fabrication of WO3 patterns by EFAD printing to produce partially exposed ITO-coated electrodes. Furthermore, we demonstrate energy storage devices that display their real-time capacity in color using these WO3-based ECDs. These devices can simultaneously work as pseudocapacitor and ECDs. These electrochromic supercapacitors (ECS) can also work as an energy storage device or a power supply source. These results imply that these functional ECDs in this thesis have tremendous potential for application in smart and multifunctional electronics.
