In this paper, we reported the results of a study on a transparent polymer electrolyte with adhesive properties for flexible electrochromic devices. ECD is the principle that discoloration and decolorization occur reversibly through oxidation/reduction reactions of electrochromic materials, and an oxidation reaction on one side and a reduction reaction on the other for charge balance. Flexible ECD is being actively studied in recent years because it can be integrated as a layer into existing windows at low cost and light, and can solve the problem of having to completely replace a window. Next, the electrochromic layer implements various colors according to the type of discoloration material, and WO3 and PB each exhibit color (blue) under opposite electrochemical conditions. Since it has a nano-particle structure, its surface area is wide and thus high. It has discoloration/bleaching efficiency and fast transmittance switching characteristics. Finally, the electrolyte is an important component, and the interface between the electrolyte and the two electrodes of the ECD determines the overall performance of the device. In this study, since the ECD is manufactured using a flexible substrate, the use of a liquid electrolyte is not possible, so a polymer-based solid polymer electrolyte was used. In the manufacture of ECD, if a polymer electrolyte having adhesive properties is used, since it has a strong binding force between the electrolyte and the electrode, interfacial charge transfer characteristics can be improved, and at the same time, physical stability of the flexible ECD can be secured. If a thermosetting polymer with chemical bonding is used, a strong bonding can be provided, but since it is fragile, a polymer that physically bonds for performance such as flexibility of a flexible ECD was used. Among them, PVA and PVAc, which are used where strong interfacial adhesion performance and optical transparency are required, were used. PEG and P-1500 were used as plasticizers to increase the elongation at break, adhesion and film flexibility. Both PEG, which can improve ionic conductivity and have strong hydrogen bonds with terminal hydroxyl groups, and P-1500, an adipate plasticizer that exhibits resistance to UV degradation, are colorless. In this study, as the anion size of the lithium salt increases, the mobility of ions decreases, but the degree of dissociation increases due to the decrease in ionic binding strength with cations. LiTFSI, which has a large anion size, has the highest ionic conductivity, and accordingly, the optical density and diffusion coefficient are calculated high. Using the designated lithium salt LiTFSI, the experiment was conducted for each plasticizer according to the polymer. To summarize the results, if PEG is used when the polymer is PVA, a film is formed due to excessive hydrogen bonding of the hydroxyl groups of the polymer and plasticizer in the electrolyte. Performance has deteriorated. For this polymer, it is preferable to use P-1500, an adipate plasticizer, and if P-1500 is used when the polymer is PVAc, the carboxylic groups of the polymer and the plasticizer are excessively bonded in the electrolyte and the chains are complexly entangled. It was measured low. In this case, it is preferable to use PEG as a plasticizer. From the above results, it was found that for excellent bleached/colored performance of ECD, a plasticizer that matches the properties of the polymer should be selected. In addition, the adhesion strength and ECD performance of the chemically bonded epoxy electrolyte and the physically bonded electrolyte were compared. As a result, it was confirmed that the chemically bonded electrolyte exhibited remarkably low ECD performance, and the adhesive strength had a lower elongation than the physically bonded electrolyte and had similar adhesive strength. As a result, it was possible to develop a flexible ECD polymer electrolyte having excellent binding power and transparency through an appropriate combination of lithium salt, plasticizer and polymer.
