A literature review of this study was conducted by focusing on the fact that Chinese landscape painting theory, which contains ancient philosophical thoughts and aesthetic ideologies, and a theoretical book“Yuanye”, written by Ji Cheng, a painter and landscape architect, are related to landscape production. In other words, based on the theory of Chinese landscape painting accumulated from the Wei Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties period, the artists expressed the landscape in two-dimensional paintings and Ji Cheng arranged it as a gardening theory, it was based on the inference that landscapers had materialized the three-dimensional gardens. The characteristics of landscape production shown in Chinese landscape painting theory and “Yuanye” were derived. As the first process of research, this study examines the development of Chinese landscape painting theory, nine representative landscape painting theories such as “Turquoise landscape”(Wei Jin and the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Xiao Yi), “Landscape formula (the Tang Dynasty, Wang Wei)”, “Landscape theory”(the Tang Dynasty, Wang Wei)”, “A Conversation on Method (the Five Dynasties, Jing Hao)”, “Importance of landscape (the Five Dynasties, Jing Hao)”, “Lin Quan Gao Zhi (Song dynasty, Gu Xi and Gu Sa)”, “Complete works of landscape (Song dynasty, Han Zhuo)”, “Writing landscape tips (Yuan dynasty, Huang Gongwang)”, “Huishi Weiyan (Ming dynasty, Tang Zhiqi)”and etc. were selected, landscape elements were extracted from the texts described by the painting theory, and the distribution of the elements that are the objects of landscape production was identified. Next, from the perspective of the previous research, the sentences that described the landscape production technique were extracted from the writings of landscape theory by dividing it into ‘contrast’and ‘transformation’. The techniques of ‘main part’, ‘size’, ‘density’, ‘explicit and implicit’, ‘empty and solid’ which correspond to‘contrast’and the techniques of ‘height’and ‘winding’which correspond to ‘transformation’were summarized. The second research process examines the sentences corresponding to the landscape production technique in “Yuanye” and compares it with the theory of landscape painting. The landscape characteristics of the garden are summarized by illustrating the landscape paintings that can explain detailed landscape production techniques and the example of landscape from existing Suzhou private garden. First, landscape elements described in nine theories, which had a great influence on the development of Chinese landscape painting theory, are sorted by ‘the scenery of the season’ and ‘scenery’types. ‘The scenery of the season’ is again classified into ‘mountain scenery’, ‘waterscape’, ‘plant’, ‘animal’, ‘artificial’, and ‘scenery’ is divided into ‘weather’, ‘seasonal’ and ‘time’. The height of‘mountain landscapes’ are emphasized like mountain peaks and mountaintops, and a staffage such as valleys, cliffs, bluffs, foothills, mountain ranges, hills, embankments, caves, rocks, and stones is depicted. ‘Waterscape’ refers to rivers showing the appearance of large and small flowing water, streams, brooks, creeks, rapids, and seawater and lakes that stay in large areas. It also included waterfalls, waves, spring waters, pools of water with the form of the strong movement of the water, and springs that served as a source of water. Through these waterscape elements, it can be seen that the landscape created by the water that varies according to the surrounding conditions is carefully observed. ‘Plant’ is a type called a common noun such as forest, tree, shrub, branch, or leaf; plants such as pines, evergreens, and willows, locus trees, and chrysanthemums are specified. These species of trees provide the basis for understanding the local landscape of that time. In the ‘scenery’many clouds, fog, sunset, haze, and smoke appeared as a meteorological phenomena; and rain, wind, snow, sun, and stars were represented. In addition, the temporality which is divided into landscape of the four seasons and dawn, morning, sunset, night are often described in Chinese landscape painting. By combining the change of scenery mixed with natural landscape, the landscape that the artist pursues in his mind is reflected in a canvas. Second, as a result of examination of the landscape production characteristics of Chinese private garden from the landscape painting theory perspective and Yuanye, characteristics are summarized into ‘contrast’ and ‘transformation’, production techniques such as ‘main part’, ‘size’, ‘density’, ‘explicit and implicit’, ‘empty and solid’which correspond to the characteristics of ‘contrast’and the techniques of ‘height’and ‘winding’which correspond to ‘transformation’were extracted. This result, namely ‘size’and ‘major part’which shows the equilibrium relationship between big and small scenery of the season, can be seen in the landscape created by the surrounding Taihushi landscape, The Lion Forest Garden, and The Humble Administrator’s Garden’s water surface of the water centering on the Cloud Capped Peak of The Lingering Garden. ‘Density’ technique is shown in the landscape formed by wide calm waters surrounded tightly by the architecture in the The Master-of-Nets Garden. The technique of ‘explicit and implicit’, which means that the more you hide, the more interesting it gets, the more you reveal, the smaller it gets; and the technique of empty and filled so-called‘empty and solid’can be seen in the summerhouse hidden behind trees in The Humble Administrator’s Garden, and in the landscape of summerhouse hidden behind an artificial hill in the Lion Forest Garden. And the ‘transformation’ appears in the way of forming the height of the terrain by stacking an artificial hill by using the technique of ‘height’in landscape production. The artificial hill, which is placed in the pond of the Lion Forest Garden, the Zigzag Walkway through the Osmanthus Fragrance Pavilion of the The Lingering Garden, and the upper surface appear as a wave-shaped fence. ‘Varying sceneries with changing view-points’which was mentioned by Gu Xi in the theory of landscape painting provides a variety of landscapes that vary depending on the movement even in the garden, the ‘winding’is expressed specifically in the Zigzag Walkway of The Humble Administrator’s Garden and curved linearity of the Lion Forest Garden. As has been seen, Chinese landscape painting theory accumulated by Chinese artists of all time by carefully observing natural landscapes and expressing natural beauty reached the theory of gardening pursued by Ji Cheng, which is‘Even though it is made by man, it is exactly the same as that made by heaven’. On the basis of this, this study considers the landscape production techniques which are identically presented in the Chinese landscape painting theory and the garden theory, and explains them as the scenes produced in the private garden of Suzhou, and this study is significant to provide a glimpse into the spatial composition of the Chinese garden and the characteristics of landscape production.
