The Effects of Writing Thank-You Letters and Receiving Positive Feedback on the Self-Esteem and Prosociality of Elementary School Students원문보기
자아존중감을 측정하기 위한 도구로는 Coopersmith(1967)의 SEI(Self-Esteem Inventory)를 박선미(2009)가 재구성한 검사지를 사용하였다.

This study is conducted in order to estimate how writing thank-you letters that receive positive feedback is influencing the development of high self-esteem and prosociality of elementary school students. The definitions of main concepts are as below. A thank-you letter refers to a form of writing by which a person expresses gratitude to those whose grateful words and behaviors have positive and lasting influences. Self-esteem is an evaluation of oneself and it is about the degree to which how a person respects oneself and finds oneself worthy. Prosociality denotes socially benevolent behaviors, which are harmless to other people, and incorporates internal motivation that elicits such behaviors. Positive feedback refers to a form of writing by which a person shows gratitude, pays a compliment, and expresses encouragement, support, and empathy in return for receiving a thank-you letter. This treatise delves into the following research problems. First, how is writing thank-you letters that receive positive feedback influencing the self-esteem of elementary school students? Second, how is writing thank-you letters that receive positive feedback influencing the prosociality of elementary school students? In order to examine these research problems, 76 students-who are comprised of experimental group of 25 students, comparative group of 26, and control group of 25-from three classes in the fifth grade of Y Elementary School were selected and an activity of writing thank-you letters that receive positive feedback was practiced once a week over a period of 8 weeks. After the experimentation was completed, in order to estimate how writing thank-you letters that receive positive feedback is influencing the self-esteem and prosociality of elementary school students, the effectivity was measured based on the test results comparing before and after the experimentation. The testing tool that is used to measure self-esteem is one which was reconstructed by Sunmi Park(2009) who referred to SEI(Self-Esteem Inventory) designed by Coopersmith(1967). The testing tool that is used to measure prosociality is one which was modified and supplemented to be applied to elementary school students by Younghee Koh(2011) who referred to Self-Report Altruism Scale designed by Eisenberg(1989). In order to examine the effectivity of this research, the analysis of test results was verified by One-Way ANOVA under the SPSS 21.0 program. The summary of test results is as below. First, the self-esteem scores of comparative group and experimental group who practiced writing thank you letters that received positive feedback proved to be higher than the self-esteem scores of control group. This shows that an activity of writing thank-you letters that receive positive feedback is effective to improve the self-esteem of fifth grade elementary school students. Second, the prosociality scores of experimental group who practiced writing thank-you letters that received positive feedback proved to be higher than the prosociality scores of comparative group and control group. This shows that an activity of writing thank-you letters that receive positive feedback is effective to improve the prosociality of fifth grade elementary school students. Based on the test results as above, it is confirmed that an activity of writing thank-you letters that receive positive feedback can be a meaningful task that may improve the self-esteem and prosociality of fifth grade elementary school students. As seen in previous researches that show the effectivity of listing up thankful events and writing thank you diaries, an activity of writing thank-you letters likewise have positive influences on the development of self-esteem and prosociality. Also, positive feedback such as paying compliments, expressing support and empathy proved to have more positive influences on the development of self-esteem and prosociality of fifth grade elementary school students. In consequence, if a school or a family sets up a long-term plan and practices an activity of writing thank-you letters that receive positive feedback, it is highly likely that this activity may have positive influences on the development and maintenance of self-esteem and prosociality of upper grades elementary school students. In particular, given that positive feedback is provided by friends, teachers, and parents in return for receiving thank-you letters, it is expected that there will be more positive influences on the development of self-esteem and prosociality of these students.
