Nano-bio interface is a comprehensive concept of the interaction between nanomaterials and biological entities. The nano-bio interfaces are widely used in the fields of biomedical research such as the diagnosis, drug delivery, and therapeutic technologies, as well as in the field of toxicity studies of nanomaterials. In this study, I showed that the nanomaterials-based biohazards diagnosis and relationship between nanomaterials behaviors and nanotoxicity. Nanomaterials are nano-scaled material and have a large surface area and unique properties. The first study of nanomaterials-based biohazards diagnosis is influenza virus detection using inverse opal structure, one of the photonic crystal. Inverse opal structures functionalized with antibodies against influenza showed excellent sensitivity and selectivity for diagnosis. The second study is a diagnostic method using nanopillar structures, one of the other types of nanostructures. Polydopamine and peptide were used for simplifying surface functionalization. This study showed a simple functionalization method and label-free detection of the influenza virus using a nanopillar structure. The final study is the diagnosis of bacteria using novel nanoprobes. In this study, silica-polymer based novel nanoparticles were used for improving the stability and sensitivity of fluorescence in the conventional fluorescence in situ hybridization. The nanoparticles were functionalized by single-stranded DNA, be possible to diagnose both antibiotic-resistant and non-antibiotic resistant bacteria. This chapter demonstrated that the nano-bio interfaces play an important role in the diagnosis of biohazards. The applications of nanobiotechnology have increased dramatically. However, many recent studies have been reported on the risk of nanomaterials. In this study, I approached from the perspective of the nano-bio interface to the correlation between nanomaterial behavior and toxicity. The first is a study of silver nanoparticle behavior and toxicity using a zebrafish embryo. In this study, I show that the toxicity of the silver nanoparticles is related to the behaviors of nanomaterials. The second study is about the in vivo behavior and biological effects of nanoplastics using a zebrafish embryo. Nanoplastics also belong to the category of nanomaterials and are a major issue in terms of nanotoxicity due to their small size and poor decomposition properties. This study demonstrated that the nanoplastics bioaccumulation and biological effects depend on their size and accelerate toxic materials, such as metal ions. Both studies confirm that the nano-bio interfaces play an important role in investigating the cause of nanotoxicity. Nano-bio interfaces, the interaction between nanomaterials and biological entities, are becoming more important as nano-biotechnology develops. Based on the application and understanding of nano-bio interfaces, this study suggests that the nano-bio interfaces can be applied to various research fields relating to nanomaterials.
