South Korea has seen noticeable growth in its multicultural population, and correspondingly multicultural education has become one of the top educational issues and concerns. In such context, this study explored the Sunday School teachers’ experiences and reception of multiculturalism, and also how these multicultural experiences affect the teachers’ multicultural acceptance. In order to do so, surveys were distributed and collected from 330 Sunday School teachers who are associated with Christian organizations in Seoul and Gyeonggi provinces. Survey items on Multicultural Experiences were adopted from Chang & Lee (2010)’s Cross-Cultural Life Experience Checklist (CCLEC), originally developed by Ward(1996). Survey items on Multicultural Acceptance, comprising Diversity, Relations, and Universality, were taken from the Korean Women’s Development Institute(2012)’s Korean Multi-Cultural Inventory. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS for Windows, version 22.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). Reliability analysis, frequency and descriptive analysis, Pearson’s correlation analysis, and hierarchial regression analysis were used for examining the data. The major findings of the study were as follows. First, the examination of Sunday School teachers’ formal multicultural experiences revealed that approximately 20% of the respondents have had experiences in some sort of multicultural education. The average was 2.7 times. With regard to experiences engaging with foreigners or foreign expatriates, multicultural events and volunteer involvements such as Festivals or Sports Day were about 20% each. Informal experiences were categorized and analyzed by International Trip and Short-term Stay, Experiences of Interacting with Foreign Expatriates, Daily Experiences, and Media Experiences, and Short-term International Trip indicated the highest, with 68% of the respondents reporting as having so. Second, the Sunday School teachers’ acceptance of multiculturalism was examined by the sub-domains. Analysis revealed that regarding Diversity, Stereotypes and Discrimination was the lowest, while Rejection-Avoidance was the lowest with regard to Relations domain. Regarding Universality, Global Citizenship and Action indicated the highest. Third, the correlation analysis of the Sunday School teachers’s formal and informal multicultural experiences and their acceptance of multiculturalism revealed that regarding formal experiences, Experiences in Multicultural Education was positively correlated with Diversity and Relations, while the Number of Educational Experiences was positively correlated with Diversity. Experiences in Multicultural Activities was positively correlated with Relations and Universality, while the Number of Activity Experiences was positively correlated with Universality. Regarding informal experiences, Interaction Experiences with Foreign Peers showed positive correlations with Diversity, Relations, and Universality. Daily Experiences was positively correlated with Diversity, while Media Experiences indicated positive correlations with Relations and Universality. Multicultural Acceptance as a whole indicated positive correlation with Experiences in the Multicultural Education, the Number of Multicultural Education, Experiences in Multicultural Activities, Experiences in Interacting with Foreign Peers, Daily Experiences, and Media Experiences. Finally, analysis was conducted to examine the effect of Sunday School teachers’ multicultural experiences on the sub-domain of Multicultural Acceptance—Diversity, Relations, and Universality, as well as on the overall Multicultural Acceptance. Controlling for age and household income, a significant predictor of Diversity was Experiences in Multicultural Education. Experiences of Interacting with Foreign Peers had significant correlation to Diversity, Relations, and Universality. This study provides insights to the relationship between the Sunday School teachers’ multicultural experiences and their reception of multiculturalism. To promote the Sunday School teachers’ reception of multiculturalism, the findings suggest the importance of finding ways to provide formal opportunities for multicultural education within the churches, and also to promote informal opportunities via meaningful interactions with the multicultural populations in the community.
