Trend Analysis and Effectiveness Analysis of Parental Participatory Play Therapy
Lim Sunja Department of Interdisciplinary Program of Psychology Rehabilitation Graduate School, Myongji University Directed by Professor Sunwoo Hyun
This research was to present an implication of parental participatory play therapy in Korea by looking at the overall domestic research trend. Therefore trend research was conducted with synthesizing preceding researches, and meta-analysis of the effectiveness was performed. The results of the research would provide valuable information to an actual clinical scene, and also present a research direction with balanced development in the parental participatory play therapy. It would also contribute to build a foundation in strengthening and systematizing theories and clinics. Parental participatory play therapy aims to improve parent-child relationship. In the process of a play therapy, parents would be a client and learner, they would participate taking a role of sensitive parent and they are the arbitration of everyday parent-child relationship by applying at home what they have learned. To fulfil the purpose of the research, a comprehensive search was done through all time research trend for the parental participatory play therapy in Korea. From 1996 to August 2019 all thesis and journal papers were set to be the analysis target and 162 literatures were selected. This research was performed with a pair of parent-child from one child family, and inquired the research trend of parental participatory play therapy in its general characteristics, research subject, type of arbitration, dependent variables. Furthermore, control group pre and post experimental designs were performed to examine the efficacy of parental participatory play therapy, and meta-analysis was done in 55 articles that enabled to calculate standard deviation and the average. Among the selected meta-analysis target literatures, 3 researches that have 2 experimental groups in one literature were included and each had been separately classified as one research. Therefore 58 literatures were selected in total to be the target literatures for meta-analysis. The result of the research were as below. First of all, the researches in parental participatory play therapy have been published more than 20 articles in 3 year cycle since 1996. Doctoral dissertations were 6.8%, master’s thesis were 38.3%, journal articles were 55% to be the most. However, the initial publication form before the academic publication was mostly master’s thesis which was 55%. 88.3% were quantitative researches whereas 47% were mixed of quantitative and qualitative researches. 5.6% were phenomenological qualitative research that had been mostly publicized from year 2014, which showed recent enlargement of this area. 84% of research design in parental participatory play therapy were pre and post experimental designs, and it appeared that arbitration time as 59 minutes was 29.6% and longer than 120 minutes was 27.8%. Total session number of 8~10 sessions were 51.2% to be the highest and 11~14 sessions were 24.7%. Secondly, the highest number of research subject were between 4 to below 6 years old to be 42.6%. Next 20.4% were between 6 to 8 years old which means 63% of the subjects were between 4 to below 8 years old, before and after elementary school admission. Participation of boys (62.9%) were more than girls (37.2%). Among the parents, participation of mother was the majority (86.4%) in the research. Looking at the research subjects by factors, emotional behavior factors were 24.7%, ordinary children 19.8%, developmental factors 19.8%, environmental factors 16.7%, parent factors 16.1%, and body factors were 3.1% to be in order. Third, the types of arbitration in parental participatory play therapy were; Filial Therapy 66 articles, Theraplay 59 articles, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy; PCIT 14 articles, Sand Tray Play 8 articles, responsive Teaching; RT 5 articles, Developmental Play Therapy 3 articles, Floor-time 2 articles, and 5 articles for other arbitration programs. Fourth, dependent variables in parental participatory play therapy were separately analyzed as child variable, parent variable, and parent-child variable. In sub variables of child variable, there were 55 articles for improvement of child problem behavior, 12 articles for improvement of sociality, 4 articles for child depression, 4 articles for self-esteem, and 3 articles for peer relationship. 45 articles for parenting stress, 17 articles for parenting efficacy, 9 articles for parent depression, and 7 articles for parent acceptance in sub variables of parent variables. In sub variables of parent-child variables, 81 articles for interaction, 26 articles for sympathy, 12 articles for attachment, and 8 articles for communication. Fifth, total number of 228 effect sizes were analyzed among 58 articles that verified the effects for parental participatory play therapy. Overall average effect size was ES=1.35(p.05) and statistically meaningful. Sub variables were; child interaction ES=1.36, attachment stability ES=1.30, social emotional ability ES=1.08, and problem behavior ES=0.90 in orderly manner, and showed a big effect size. The effect size differences between the groups were meaningless, but each effect size was statistically meaningful. Average effect size of parental participatory play therapy in parent variables was 1.12(p<.05)) and statistically very meaningful. In sub variables, parent interaction was ES=1.78, parenting stress ES=1.05, emotional expression and control ES=0.88, parenting efficacy ES=0.79 to be in order, and the value of effect size within and between the groups were statistically meaningful. Lastly, Average effect size of parental participatory play therapy in types of arbitration were; Parent-Child Interaction Therapy; PCIT ES=1.65, Filial Therapy ES=1.45, Sand Tray Play ES=1.45, Theraplay ES=1.27, and others (responsive Teaching; RT, Developmental Play Therapy, Emotion-focused Play Therapy Program) ES=0.66, to be in order. The differences in effect size between these groups, and each values in average effect size were statistically meaningful. Average effect size of parental participatory play therapy in study subject configuration types were; parent factors ES=1.67, environmental factors ES=1.54, general factors ES=1.28, emotional behavior factors ES=1.16, body factors ES=1.16, developmental factors ES=0.77 to be in order. The difference between the groups was not statistically meaningful but the values in average effect size within the groups were statistically meaningful. The meaning of this research was to provide the necessary basic data for the practice of parental participatory play therapy and to prepare the research foundations by analyzing the efficacy and the research trends in South Korea.
