In this thesis, we are aiming for the preparation of surface-functionalized nanocomposites for enhanced photovoltaic and electrochemical energy-conversion efficiency. Utilizing solar and hydrogen energies have been attracting attention since these energies are promising candidates to replace conventional fossil fuels. In chapters 1 and 2, we described the preparation of surface carbon shell-functionalized ZrO2 (ZrO2-C) and the investigation of ZrO2-C as a nanofiller (NF) in polymer gel electrolyte (PGE) for improved photovoltaic performances of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The ZrO2 was surface-graft polymerized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (POEM) and used as a scaffold to prepare the ZrO2-C through the thermal carbonization. The power conversion efficiency of ZrO¬2-C/PEG-based DSSC was 5.6 % which is higher than PEG-based DSSC (4.8 %). The enhanced photovoltaic performances are attributed to (1) decreased the counter electrode/electrolyte interfacial resistance due to the catalytic effects of the carbon shells of ZrO2-C which can create continuous electron-conducting paths where electrons transport and (2) enhanced charge transfer rate due to the Lewis acid-base interactions between ZrO2 and polymer in PGE reduce the crystallinity, which increases the free volume where ions diffuse. In chapters 3 and 4, we discussed the preparation of hierarchical mesoporous Pt nanoparticles using an environmentally friendly Fu biopolymer (Fu-PtNPs) and its investigation toward electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. The Fu was used as a surface engineering compound for preparing of coral-like rough surface morphologies of Fu-PtNPs. The designed Fu-PtNPs showed an overpotential of 33 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which was comparable to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts (29 mV). The Fu-PtNPs yielded better mass activity normalized with Pt amount compared to commercial Pt/C. It was noteworthy that the Pt amount in catalyst ink of Fu-PtNPs was 0.033 mg mL-1, which was approximately 20 times lower than that of commercial Pt/C (0.64 mg mL-1). The excellent HER activity is attributed to the highly porous structure, and good surface wettability of the Fu-PtNPs, which results in enhanced electrocatalytic activity, decreased resistance at the electrode/electrolyte interface, and facile penetration of the electrolytes into the electrode.
