This study attempted to investigate effects of the removal of regular polish and gel polish on the nails and skin around. For this, a pilot survey and clinical trials were performed. Specifically, sebum and moisture levels were measured, and the surface was examined using vapometer and SEM before and after clinical trials against a total of 80 adult women in their 20-50s, who agreed to participate in this experiment. Then, the study results found the followings: First, according to a pilot survey, a statistically significant difference was found in the awareness of safety in terms of the perception of regular polish by general characteristics. In the degree of damage from regular polish by general characteristics, there was a difference in age. In the degree of damage from gel polish, a difference was found by age, marital status and average monthly income. Concerning interest in nail by care habits, ‘hand cream’ was most responded when asked about a preferred nail care method. In terms of preferred polish, ‘gel polish’ was answered. In terms of the awareness of safety, cost efficiency and effectiveness, ‘gel polish’ was responded. The damage on nails and skin around was high in ‘gel polish’. Second, according to comparison of nail moisture before and after nail care between regular polish and gel polish, it dropped more in ‘gel polish’. In skin around the nails as well, ‘gel polish’ was greater in terms of the loss of nail moisture. According to comparison of nail sebum before and after nail care, loss of nail sebum was greater in ‘gel polish’ except for the middle finger nail with regular polish. According to analysis of differences before and after vapometer analysis, the loss of nail moisture was found in the index and middle finger nails with gel polish and the skin around the middle finger nail, having an influence on skin barrier. According to the observation of nail surface using the SEM, ‘gel polish’ was far greater than ‘regular polish’ in terms of nail damage. Third, in terms of satisfaction after the experiment, ‘gel polish’ was less satisfied. Regarding satisfaction after treatment, ‘good persistence’ of gel polish was most responded. The above results confirm that ‘gel polish’ is greater than ‘regular polish’ in terms of damage on nails and skin around. It is anticipated that they would be available as basic data in keeping nails and skin around healthy and youthful.
