In this paper, ZrOCl2·8H2O was synthesized into Zirconia by a thermal hydrolysis method, and the sintering properties of powder were characterized for the optimum synthesis time. For the first study, in order to reduce a long process time, which is one of disadvantage of the hydrolysis method, the properties of the synthesis powder according to the synthesis time were studied. Secondly, yttria-stabilized zirconia was synthesis according to the optimum hydrolysis synthesis time and cubic phase zirconia was obtained with the minimum concentration of yttria, which is supposed to be the grain size effects. Finally, tetragonal yttria-stabilized zirconia was synthesized by hydrolysis and co-precipitation method, and the difference between the synthesis methods was discussed as sintering properties. In order to synthesize zirconia by hydrolysis method, 0.2㏖ of ZrOCl2·8H2O was added to distilled water, and the mixture was stirred 180RPM continiously at 98℃ for a long time. For the optimum synthesis time, the crystalline content and particle properties were analyzed. Synthesis of monoclinic zirconia with 98.5% crystallization was carried out at 96hours with an average of primary particle size of 3 to 5㎚ rods shapes and secondary particle size of 150㎚ with a spherical shape. Due to the grain size effect of nano-sized primary particles, a complete cubic zirconia stabilized in low yttria content of 5.5㏖% with sintering temperature of 1350℃ was synthesized. Furthermore, 3㏖% yttria tetragonal stabilized zirconia was synthesized by hydrolysis and coprecipitation, and sintered at 1250-1450℃. In the case of the co-precipitation method, since the first amorphous is synthesized, agglomeration occurs between the particles after drying. Due of that a pulverization and dispersion process is required to control the heat treatment process for crystallization and disperse the agglomeration between the particles after heat treatment. Therefore, compared to the hydrolysis method of chemically synthesizing zirconia, the co-precipitation method which has a non-uniform particle size, the addition of dispersant to facilitate the process and the first strongly agglomerated particles make it difficult to densify the particles during sintering and fine pores still remained after sintered at 1350℃. In the case of hydrolysis synthesis method, a crystalline zirconia is synthesized with particle uniform particle size distribution, D50=150㎚ in a spherical shape which is weakly aggregated after drying, thus results in a high formability and excellent physical properties even at low sintering temperature of 1250℃. It was possible to produce tetragonal yttria stabilized zirconia of a dense sintered compact.
