The purpose of this study is to examine the significance of teaching coming-of-age novels in the changing process of curricula, and to suggest the direction of coming-of-age novel teaching.
Human beings are growing, and the growing process is one of the universal characteristics of human life. There are hardships and difficulties in the course of human life, and human beings grow by overcoming them. Literature portrays the truth of human life, so literary works contain aspects of human growth. When appreciating such literary works dealing with human growth, it is necessary to pay attention to the growth of the person shown in the work and to accept or reflect on our lives. Therefore, in order for literature education through coming-of-age novel to realize appropriate educational values, appropriate works should be selected and teaching-learning methods of the novel should properly reflect the educational goals of Korean Language subject.
Newly revised Korean textbooks according to 2015 Revised Curriculum have been used in school since the 2018 school year. From 1955 when the first curriculum was announced to the current 2015 revised curriculum, the textbooks contained different modern novels under the same achievement standards. Although the contents of learning activities are organized differently due to the differences in the interpretation of textbooks on the achievement standards presented in the curriculum, a close look will show that there is no clear difference in the composition of individual literary works adopted by textbooks according to the new curriculum from the ones in the old curricula.
Therefore, this paper recognized the limitations in teaching coming-of-age novels in the curriculum, and tried to find answers on the basic questions such as what, how and why should be educated in coming-of-age novel education in 2015 Revised Curriculum.
From this viewpoint, Middle School Korean textbooks published by different publishing companies from the first educational curriculum to the latest 2015 Revised Curriculum were reviewed. A total of 194 modern novels were contained in those textbooks. Of these, 21 works, classified as coming-of-age novels, were analyzed by dividing and analyzing them according to the year of publication, social background, time of year, gender of the subject and the author, theme, and domestic or foreign works. Through this process, coming-of-age novels covered in the educational curriculum from the beginning up to now were reviewed.
In addition, to compare the achievement standards presented in the five coming-of-age novels that those curricula selected in common, the literature achievement standards of the 2009 and 2015 revised curriculum were reviewed. It was also tried to examine the direction of coming-of-age novel education in the future by analyzing the aspect of achievement criteria that showed changes as the curricula were revised from 2009 to 2015.
Based on the above analysis, this study suggested the following direction for coming-of-age novel education. First, it is necessary to prepare unit learning goals that focus on the character who grows. Second, the teaching-learning method to internalize the coming-of-age novel should be set up in more detail. Third, the number of works showing the growth process of female characters should be increased. Fourth, it is necessary to increase the works reflecting the realistic conflicts that adolescent learners can relate to. Fifth, it is necessary to actively explore coming-of-age novels in other cultures.
This study is meaningful to approach coming-of-age novel education in a more intrinsic aspect through the proposal how to select coming-of-age novels for the textbooks that has not been studied so far beyond the simple reading and acceptance dimension where learners read the works in the textbooks by embodying the discussion about coming-of-age novel education which has not been sufficiently addressed. It is expected that coming-of-age novel education will be developed in a way that will provide the opportunity for learners to seek more subjective and active growth.
