The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the yoga exercise program on the fall risk factors of the elderly and to compare the fall prevention effect with the Otago exercise and the control group. For this purpose, 31 participants aged 65 or older registered in the Seniors' Welfare Center in Seoul were randomly assigned to yoga group(n = 9), Otago group(n = 11), and control group(n = 11). Each exercise program was applied 60 minutes twice a week for 10 weeks. Low extremity muscle strength and power, grip strength, hip flexibility, static balance ability, gait speed and falls efficacy were measured pre and post exercise intervention. All obtained data were analyzed using SPSS statistics 21, Mean and Standard Deviation(SD) were calculated. Wilcoxon test was performed for pre and post differences within the group. The Kruskal-Wallis Test was used to verify the differences among the three groups, and the Mann-Whitney U test was performed for the post-test when there were differences. To correct the error of the post-test, p=0.05/3 was used according to Bonfferoni Correction. All statistical significance levels were set at α=.05. The results are as follows.
1. In the low extremity muscle strength, the yoga group showed significant increase in the left hip abduction, internal rotation, left, right ankle dorsiflexion, left, right plantar flexion (p<.05), in the Otago group, strength was significantly increased after exercise in the right hip internal rotation(p<.05), left, right ankle dorsiflexion, and left, right plantar flexion(p<.01). The intergroup analysis showed that the Otago group significantly increased muscle strength in the right hip internal rotation, left ankle dorsiflexion than the control group, the left ankle plantar flexion, and the right ankle plantar flexion than the yoga group and the control group.
2. In the lower extremity muscle power pre and post the exercise program, the yoga and Otago group showed significant increase at the chair rise maximum power, but there was no significant difference among the groups. In the chair rise maximum velocity, there was no significant difference within the group pre and post exercise, neither among the groups.
3. In the grip strength pre and post exercise program, yoga, Otago, and control group showed significant increase, but there was no significant difference among the groups.
4. In the lower extremity flexibility pre and post the exercise program showed no significant increase in both yoga and Otago groups, and there was no significant difference among the groups.
5. In the static balance ability pre and post exercise program, the yoga group showed significant decrease in sway area tandem, C.O.P. length tandem(p<.05), and the Otago group showed significant decrease in sway area Romberg, semi-tandem, tandem(p<.05), one-leg stand(p<.01), and COP length Romberg, tandem, one-leg(p<.05) after exercise. In intergroup analysis, yoga and Otago in sway area tandem were significantly lower than control group(p=.0004, p=.014), and C.O.P. length one-leg, the Otago group was significantly decreased compared to the yoga group(p=.012).
6. In 2.4m up and go test pre and post the exercise program, the Otago group was significantly faster after the exercise(p<.01), The intergroup analysis showed that the yoga group and the Otago group were significantly faster than the control group.
7. In falls efficacy pre and post exercise program showed that mobility was significantly improved after exercise in the Otago group(p<.05). The intergroup analysis showed that the Otago group improved significantly in the mobility category compared to the yoga group(p=.002).
Despite of the positive falls prevention effects of 10 weeks of yoga exercise program in muscle strength, muscle power, grip strength, static balance and dynamic balance, there was no significance found in flexibility and falls efficacy, hence, further study is necessary to add or supplement posture. In particular, compared to the Otago exercise, muscle strength and static balance were lowered, and the fall efficacy was also low, the study should be conducted to revise and strengthen the exercise prescription of the yoga program and to increase the number of subjects and the duration of the program in the future.
