The purpose of this study is to examine the reality of early childhood education teachers’ multimedia usage and their perception of multimedia utilization, and the effect of multimedia utilization on teacher-child interaction. The survey was conducted on 274 kindergarten and daycare center teachers in charge of ages 3 to 5 in Seoul and Gyeonggi. The collected data were analyzed by using frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, chisquare test, Fisher’s exact test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis according to the research questions. The specific research questions to achieve this purpose are as follows.
1. What is the current status of multimedia use by early childhood teachers? 2. What is the early childhood teachers’ perception of multimedia utilization? 3. What is the effect of multimedia utilization on teacher-child interaction?
First, multimedia was utilized 5 days a week, and the frequency of using them was different depending on the types of institutions and the ages of the children in charge, and they were used in the class for less than 30 minutes a day on average. The activity type was found to be the most used in large/small group activities was different depending on the types of institutions and the ages of the children in charge. In the case of activity stage, it was found to be used the most at the development stage. The multimedia contents mainly include webbased contents, which are different depending on the teacher’s careers and the ages of children in charge. Early childhood teachers’ were found to modified and utilized multimedia materials according to educational purposes, which are different depending on institutions. Second, In the case of early childhood teachers’ perception of the use of multimedia, the early childhood teacher responded that multimedia is necessary because there are abundant multimedia contents to use. Many respondents replied that the main purpose of using multimedia is to provide a variety of information useful to the activities of early childhood education programs. In addition, early childhood teachers’ answered that it is difficult to use multimedia because there are not enough multimedia materials for each activity topic to be used in class. To solve the issue, it is important to develop and distribute multimedia programs that fit in well with children’s development. The early childhood teacher responded that they strongly need a training on the use of multimedia in class relevant to the production and integrated utilization of teaching material. The multimedia utilization effect in the class perceived by the early childhood teacher was high, with an average of 3.98 points based on the 5 point scale. Third, as a result of analyzing the effect of multimedia use in class on teacher-child interaction, it was found that background variables of early childhood teachers and perception of effect of multimedia use had an effect on teacher-child interaction. The correlation between the results showed that the teachers with 1 to less than 3 years of experience had a negative correlation with the interactions that supported development, and the teachers with more than 5 years of experience had positive correlation with the teacher-child interaction. The effects of multimedia utilization were found to have a high positive correlation with teacherchild interaction. As a result of examining the effect of background variables and multimedia utilization awareness of early childhood teachers on teacher-child interaction, teachers with more than 5 years of experience were significantly higher than those with less than 1 year of experience. In the ages of the children in charge, the level of teacher-child interaction of the four-year-old teacher was lower than that of the threeyear-old teacher-child interaction. In addition, the higher teachers perceive the effects of multimedia utilization, the stronger the interaction is between teachers and children. This study, unlike previous studies that focused on the actual use of multimedia devices and the perception of teachers, grasped the actual use of multimedia materials used through computers during the day and analyzed the effect of multimedia utilization education on teacher-child interaction. In addition, this study is meaningful as it gives the direction for the effective ways of utilizing multimedia in early childhood education by analyzing the influence of multimedia utilization education on teacher-child interaction.
