This study discusses American artist, Robert Smithson(1938-1973)'s film Spiral Jetty in-depth and looks into the status of this film not only from contemporary point of view, but within the scope of Robert Smithson's works. The earthwork Spiral Jetty was produced on the industrial ruin in Rozel point of the Northern Great Salt Lake in Utah, but later it was also spread to multiple mediums including essays, films, and photographs and this is why we need to consider these works to better understand his theory of work. In particular, although the film Spiral Jetty is the core of his theory of work, it has been treated as a mere document of work or subordinate element of land art, compare to his Smithson's other works. The reason his film had not seen as a single independent work of art could be because of the absence of proper analysis tool on his films. It was only from the 1990's that the category of film in film studies was extended to moving image, and essayistic film & video settled as a part of visual arts. In consequence, the study on Robert Smithson was only limited to the outer rim in the world of art. However, Smithson's relationship with the film was more than just simple interest. It was recognized in recent studies that he had not only expressed his position on contemporary films through several essays and interviews, but was already aware of European avant-garde films and theory, which has just begun to settle essay film as one of the film genres. He also had a close relationship with the experimental film community in the 1960s and early 1970s, along with Richard Serra, and Carl Andre, watching modernism films that Jonas Mekas had played regularly at Anthology Film Archives located in Soho, New York. As Smithson's partner and colleague, Nancy Holt, had related, it is well known that Robert Smithson was a Cinephile, especially fond of SF genre, and enjoyed going to New York SF film festival, collecting SF films and literature frenetically. The study on Smithson's works could be even broader to the sphere of the film based on these facts. Upon this context, this paper describes Smithson's key concepts of allegory, entropy, and spiral first, and then discusses his film Spiral Jetty from the cinematic and medium-level point of view. The status of Spiral Jetty is confirmed through 'fiction' as an inner grammar of film and the field of film as medium, and this concept of summoned fiction is a structure of film and medium, in which absence and narrative is self-conditioned, where Smithson's main concepts-site/nonsite, entropy, and spiral-are put together and embraces format and medium of Smithson's film theory as a core keyword. Putting Smithson's film on cinematic coordinate with correcting position has two major advantages. One is to broaden the scope of study on Smithson's works to the field of film, and the other is to provide the opportunity to reconsider his film works that had not been admitted in film history for broader research in the film department. To sum up, the intention of in-depth analysis on the film Spiral Jetty is not in privileging the film, but in granting the equivalent status to the land art and essay.
