Ten collegian Taewondo elite athletes (age: 21.6±1.24 years, height: 173.7±5.7 cm, mass: 68.1±8.68 kg, and Taekwondo experience: 8.6±2.6 year) voluntarily participated in this study. Three-dimensional motion measurement camera system (Osprey®, Motion Analysis Corp., Santa Rosa, CA, USA), consisting of 5 cameras (sampling rate of 240Hz), were used for collecting kicking motions with 13 reflective markers on major anatomical bone places. The vertically-upright force plate (BP300600, AMTI®, Watertown, MA, USA) with attachment of an electronic chest protector (Launch TKD Scoring, KP&P, Seoul, Korea), 87cm from the ground, was used to record peak impact forces such as normal force to plate and vertical and lateral shear-forces, respectively. Athletes performed modified kicks and roundhouse kicks, respectively, ten times per kick as fast as possible immediately after looking a cue signal from red light-emitted device in front side of the bottom. The cue signal, a trigger sign of kicking, was pressed by an operator in random timing order in order not to give an expectation of triggering signals to a kicker. Collected motion data and force data were downloaded on the computer and passed through the digital filtering process (Butterworth low-pass filter with cutoff frequencies of 8 Hz for motion data and 25 Hz for force plate data, respectively). Then dependent variables such as kicking speed, response time and movement time, joint angles, and peak forces of each axes were calculated at Matlab® (ver. 2017b, MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA). The response time of modified kick (1.08±0.07 s) was significantly was longer than that of roundhouse kick (0.83±0.05 s) (p<.05) because the modified kick showed significantly longer movement time (0.60±0.05 s) than the roundhouse kick (0.37±0.02 s) did (p<.05). The peak kicking speed of modified kick (9.03±1.00 m/s) was significantly slower than that of roundhouse kick (11.99±1.45 m/s) (p<.05). Table 1 showed the peak directional forces, which were collected by vertically-upright force plate after impulse being absorbed by 5cm thick sponge and an electronic chest protector. There were significant differences of peak directional forces in all three different orthogonal directions. The modified kick revealed the lower peak normal force (2.51±0.96 N/W) in absolute value than the roundhouse kick did (4.03±1.18 N/W), but the relative contribution of modified kick as normal force to the resultant forces (18.98±6.42%) was significantly greater than that of the roundhouse kick (12.68±3.78%) (p<.05). Even though the modified kick was slower kick than the roundhouse kick as a result of dual-task characteristics (i.e., deception motion of flexing/extending the kicking knee), it is a kind of an useful kick having decent amount of impact force (i.e., passing the impact level of detecting score) with taking out an opponent’s defensive reactions in response to kicker’s deception.
