The purpose of this study is to seek ways to improve professional identity by exploring the influence of individual characteristics, job environment, and organizational environment of sign language interpreters. These professionals work in different task and organizational environments on their professional identities. This study aims to improve the quality of interpretation services for the deaf and the welfare of the deaf through improving the professional identity of the interpreter. Further, the research explores institutional and practical ways to strengthen the professional identity of sign language interpreters. To this end, this study conducted a survey along with a postal survey on sign language interpreters who obtained the certificate of sign language interpretation from April 12, 2019 to June 10, 2019. A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed, of which 111 were collected and 95 copies (except for those with insufficient responses) were finally analyzed. The reliability, frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis for collected data were conducted using the SPSS 20.0 program. The results showed that the interpreter's experience (β=.455, p<0.001), work characteristics (β=.302, p<0.01), organizational environment (β=.239, p<0.05), and the number of interpreters in the institution (β=-.201, p<0.05) have a significant effect on professional identity. In other words, the more the interpreter's experience, the higher the professional identity, which can be interpreted as the knowledge and skills accumulated in the practical field become important factors for interpreters' professionalism. In addition, work characteristics are considered to be an important influencing factor since professional identity is enhanced when the interpreter understands his/her job well and has pride in his/her job. Positive interactions within the organization have also shown to have an effect on professional attitudes, confirming the importance of the leadership of supervisors and directors who can understand and lead sign language interpretation field. Lastly, the higher the number of interpreters in the institution, the higher the professional identity. This can be interpreted as various opportunities of mutual support and supervision to enhance professionalism lead to the increase of professional identity.
Based on the above findings, I would like to propose the following to improve the professional identity of sign language interpreters. First, there is a need to prepare a policy so that interpreters can build a sufficient career as a stable job. The unrealistic pay system for sign language interpreter service—which is currently different depending on providers—should be adjusted to a realistic level. Second, there is a need to reorganize the work system of sign language interpreting centers, considering work characteristics of the interpreters. The work must be streamlined by providing social welfare workers alongside sign language interpreter so that interpreters can concentrate on highly specialized interpreting work. Third, there is a need to introduce a supervision system that can enhance professional identity in the organizational environment of sign language interpreting institutions. To this end, it is necessary to introduce a differentiated qualification certificate system and continuing training programs according to specialized fields, and a supervision system to reduce interpretation mistakes in the field. Fourth, there is a need to prepare a guideline for the placement of sign language interpreters according to the proportion of the deaf by region and to establish a manpower training system to secure a sufficient number of interpreters.
This study is meaningful in that it provides basic data for identifying factors influencing professional identity and enhancing the level of professional identity in the absence of extensive research on professional identity of sign language interpreters. In future studies, it will be necessary to expand variables influencing the professional identity of sign language interpreters and utilize various research methods, including qualitative research methods as this research is centered mainly on surveys. This study has a limitation that a limited survey was conducted only on sign language interpreters who obtained a national certification. Therefore, it is suggested that various attempts to expand the approach to sign language interpreters who are active in the field with some experience—even if they are not qualified as certified interpreters—will be made in future studies.
