The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Pilates exercise on ankle instability, range of motion, static balance and dynamic balance in women with functional ankle instability. The subjects of this study were 21 women in their 20s and 30s who lived in Y city, Korea. The randomized study consisted of 11 women in the Pilates exercise group and 10 in the control group. The exercise program of this study was pilates exercise focused on the foot and ankles, twice a week for 8 weeks, for 60 minutes. In detail, the warm-up exercises include breathing and stretching, and the exercise was performed for 40 minutes by footwork movements using the reformer in the Pilates apparatus, and the stretching movements were 10 minutes to finish the stretching to help the muscles release. This study carried out pre and post CAIT survey evaluation, range of motion of ankle test, static balance test, and dynamic balance test. Ankle joints were ranged using a Jamar stainless goniometer (USA), while static and dynamic balances were measured using BioRescue (France) for foot print press and sway test and the limits of stability were measured. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U, was used as the SPSS 22.0 program to verify the effects of exercise. The statistical significance level was set to p<0.05. First, as a result of the difference analysis of ankle instability assessment tool (CAIT) of the two groups, there was a significant difference in the exercise group, and the ankle instability scores increased significantly in the right and left ankles. Second, the range of ankle joint movement showed significant differences in the reduction of plantar flexion and increase eversion of both feet in the exercise group. Third, in the post-group difference analysis using BioRescue, the front pressure value decreased and back pressure value was increased of the exercise group in the foot print press test. In the sway test, the surface area, the distance of movement, and the average speed of movement were significantly decreased of the exercise group when eyes were opened and eyes closed. As a result of the analysis of the Limits of stability, which is a dynamic balance test, the right, left forward, back, and total were all increased statistically significant. These results confirm that Pilates exercise program is effective for young women with ankle instability to improve functional range of motion of ankle, and positively affects ankle static balance and dynamic balance.
