Greetings are essential elements in daily language life. Not only do they function to start and end a conversation, but they also play an important role in forming and maintaining smooth interpersonal relationships. Both in Korea and China, where the Confucian culture is deeply rooted with the recognized importance of orders and manners, it is especially more important to offer well-mannered greetings than other cultural areas.
As a linguistic act, greetings are realized in conversations in various ways and perform diverse functions. They play different roles in the overall conversational flow according to their positions. This study thus set out to investigate the functions of greetings for encounter and leaving in Korean in encounter and leaving situations and examine the ways they were practiced. As a contrastive study, it would find common and different features in greeting functions between Korean and Chinese. Its ultimate goals are to promote the formation of smoother interpersonal relationships and provide reference data to improve the communicative abilities of Chinese learners of Korean and Korean learners of Chinese.
It is first needed to define what is in the category of "greetings" in the study of greetings in Korean and Chinese. As part of its theoretical background, the study reviewed previous studies to figure out the categories and functions of greetings and the usage strategies for the realization of their functions. Based on the results, an analysis framework was set for the study.
Chapter 3 divided the major functions of encounter greetings into total five categories including "calling attention," "exchanging information," "welcoming," "showing interest" and "expressing emotions." Both in Korean and Chinese, "calling attention" is realized in total six means including "terms of address," "apologies," "foreign languages," "announcing an arrival," "special vocabulary," and "conventional greetings." In both the languages, "exchanging information" is divided into "self-introduction" and "statements for the situation." "Welcoming" is realized in "urging to move," "welcoming" and "sitting" in Korean and Chinese. "Showing interest" happens through various questions about the other person's "recent conditions," "whereabouts," and "meals." And the speaker expresses his or her diverse emotions mainly including "joy," "sorry," and "unexpectedness" through "expressing emotions." The study reviewed common, different, and corresponding content of these strategies in specific practices.
Chapter 4 divided leaving greetings into total five functions including "seeing the other person off," "promising for reunion," "wrapping up the situation," "showing interest" and "expressing emotions." In Korean and Chinese, "seeing the other person off" is realized in ways of requesting earnestly for the other person's safety, asking for his or her revisit, and asking him or her to give a call after a safe arrival. "Promising for reunion" is realized in the form of a promise about "place" or "time" for the next meeting at the end of the current meeting. It is spoken mainly between individuals that meet periodically. "Wrapping up the situation" happens with "discourse markers," "conventional expressions" and "expressions to announce a movement." The functions of "showing interest" are expressed in "prayer" and "advice and encouragement" to wish for success for the other person. In a leaving situation, "expressing emotions" is always divided between two emotions, "grateful" and "sorry." The study examined the patterns of Korean and Chinese when the functions of these leaving greetings were realized along with common and different features between them.
In short, the study categorized encounter and leaving greetings in Korean and Chinese by the function and presented the linguistic means to perform each of these functions. It also examined speech restrictions according to the content to be realized, providing information to acquire and distinguish Korean and Chinese greetings in the content. Future study will be able to claim greater significance by examining and arranging differences between Korean and Chinese greetings according to such variables as situations, gender, and the speaker's relation.
