The purpose of this study was to directly compare the dental radiography (DTR) with computed tomography (CT) to measure dentoalveolar structures of normal and disease affected small sized dogs and cats. Also, we compared two different slice thickness setting, 0.5mm (CT 0.5) and 1.0mm (CT 1.0) in CT to determine more suitable for dental evaluation. To author’s knowledge, there was no study that directly compared measurements in CT with those in DTR. In normal animals, the pulp cavity-tooth width ratio (P/T ratio) and peri-ligament space were measured. In animals with dental disease, bony defects of alveolar bone and teeth were measured. All measurements in both dogs and cats were smaller in DTR compared to CT. These results support the previous study in human that conclude bone loss cans be underestimated by ~1.5mm in DTR due to distortion and superimposition. In addition, the measurement in CT 1.0 was generally to be greater than those in CT 0.5 because of poor resolution. Also, additional findings such as temporomandibular subluxation, nasopharyngeal polyps and fluid density in tympanic bulla were detected only in CT images. In conclusion, dental structures and lesion can be underestimated in DTR and CT with 0.5mm slice thickness provides more accurate information. Additional DTR, therefore, may not be required for dental diagnosis and CT can replace DTR in small-sized dogs and cats.
