Gas insulated switchgear is still widely used for stable power supply such as dividing and transferring lines in the distribution system. Since the SF6 gas insulated switchgear cannot be inspected internally after the installation, partial discharge diagnosis for the SF6 gas insulated switchgear operated in the field is generally adopted using the TEV sensor and antenna sensor. However, because of the external noise, it is difficult to distinguish from internal partial discharges that makes the diagnosis very difficult. In this paper, the aim of the study is to improve the accuracy of partial discharge diagnosis by analyzing appropriate partial discharge frequency bands and partial discharge pattern for main defects of the switchgear and deriving a distinguishable method from the external noise. For this purpose, partial discharges from internal and external(noise) sources were measured for removed switchgears at the site. Internal discharges come from as follows; moisture freezing cracks inside the bushing due to moisture infiltration, SF6 gas leakage, poor contact of moving electrodes, poor bolt tightening, etc. These internal discharge patterns show the types of surface discharge defects and floating defects) and finally lead to insulation breakdown and failure. The internal defects can be simulated by inserting modelled defects inside the switchgear. In this paper, partial discharges for the modelled defects were also measured, in addition to the measurement for the removed switchgears. For the removed switchgear from the site having moisture in bushing and SF6 gas leakage, partial discharge occurred in the similar pattern and frequency bands to modelled surface discharge. These surface discharge defects showed the highest SN ratio in the 150MHz to 250MHz band, whereas floating defects in the 200MHz to 350MHz and 450MHz to 520MHz bands. As the external discharges(noise), the discharges different from the internal discharges can be occurred from the delamination of semi-conducting paint in the bushing, regardless of the performance of the switchgear. The SN ratio of this external discharge showed high in the frequency band of 640 MHz to 770 MHz. Therefore, for the partial discharge sensor design the optimal frequency band is in the range from 250MHz to 350MHz band as the non-contact type partial discharge sensor. By using this type of sensor, it can be expected the development of partial discharge monitoring system installing in the pole for the distribution system.
