This paper describes the originality of Korean traditional opera
changgeuk(pansori opera), and the appropriateness of this study.
Specifically, this study examines the arrangement and conducting
techniques used in changgeuk and argues that changgeuk could be
further developed. This paper analyzes the pansori opera Cheong.
It is a play centered on Chang, and has numerous components
such as performers, stages, stage lighting, and costume including
music performance, melody, and dance, lending it to be called the
most Korean composite piece of art.
Chapter II of this study discusses Cheong is as matchless work
among operas spanning the more than 100 years of Korean
traditional opera. It has not only been performed the greatest
number of times and has been viewed by the greatest number of
viewers but is also the best piece in terms of musicality which is
the most important in changgeuk. Therefore, Cheong is an expel of
the direction that changgeuk should move forward. The study of
the musicality is as follows: first, all the music of Cheong is
represented in sheet music thanks to changgeuk’s
conventionalization. Second, modulation is available based on the
compass of the pansori singer’s voice. Third, it introduced
orchestra accompaniment appropriate to the whole work. Fourth,
the harmony between Korean traditional instruments and Western
instruments improves its quality. Fifth, thanks to the composition
of background music, the audience’s immersion into the scene is
improved. Sixth, the arrangement of the accompaniment
considering pansori prevents pansori singers from being drowned
out by the orchestra. Seventh, the use of choir results in a wide
range of achievements. Eighth, the role of the conductor is
highlighted along with the development of orchestral music.
Chapter III fully focuses on the arrangement technique. This
chapter analyzes the composition of music and presents actual
music which is divided into Act 1 and Act 2 according to the flow
of the music, not following script flows. As a result, a total of 16
songs appear in Act 1, consisting of 797 bars with a total of five
modulations. In addition, there are 12 changes in beats, 15 changes
in rhythm and 23 changes in tempo. In Act 2, there are a total of
17 songs consisting of 867 bars with a total of 23 modulations.
Also, there are 23 changes in beats, 21 changes in rhythm, and 25
changes in tempo.
Chapter IV studies the conductor’s communication role and the
meaning and formation of conducting patterns in relation to the
importance of the conductor’s role in the play Choeng. As a result
of the examination of conducting technique by paragraph, a
conductor has to conduct the music considering the appearance of
the characters and modulation in various scenes, the dynamic
expression of the orchestra and music, the start and end of songs
depending on the scene, the purpose of the background music, and
the time that the camera focuses on the choir. Above all, the
composer has to conduct using various conducting techniques that
suit the situational musical preference given on the sheet music.
In conclusion, artist director Yoo Young-dae and composer Lee
Yong-tak play a significant role in making Cheong a valuable and
remarkable work by composing and arranging the music perfectly
with the harmony between Western orchestral techniques and
Korean style musical techniques. Moreover, the role of a conductor
is highlighted in leading the whole play and music. Conducting
changgeuk is definitely different from general orchestra conducting
because one must consider an arrangement which highlights the
role of pansori and helps the play through the volume of
orchestral music. This study analyzes various techniques used for
composing and arranging music based on experience as a
performer of Cheong and suggests some practical conducting
techniques based on each scene.
Hopefully, this paper will be a way to present the musical aspects
of changgeuk that will continue to develop and a suggestion about
how it will be conducted.
