This study attempted to explain suicide ideation and suicide attempts of undergraduate students based on the Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide. Data were collected through an online questionnaire survey of 402 university students (178 men, 224 women, average age 21.19 years old [SD = 2.06]) at universities in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong and other areas. The measurement tools included the revised Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ-R), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (Korean Version CES-D), The Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale – Fearlessness about Death (Korean Version ACSS-FAD), and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire(SIQ). Suicide attempts were measured by suicide attempts, frequency, and method. As a result of hierarchical multiple regression analysis, even after controlling the sex, socioeconomic level and depression of the individual, the thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness significantly explained the suicide ideation. However, the effect of the interaction of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness on suicide ideation was not significant. On the other hand, both suicide ideation and acquired capability for suicide explained the frequency of suicide attempts significantly, and the interaction between suicide ideation and acquired capability for suicide had a significant effect on suicide attempt frequency. These findings suggest that the feeling of being worthless to society and burdening others is a major risk factor affecting suicide of undergraduate students and requires evaluation in terms of interpersonal needs. It also suggests that suicide risk assessment, suicide prevention and intervention should take into account the suicide ideation and the acquired capability for suicide, the ability to commit lethal suicide.
