The purpose of this study is to examine the mutual understanding that children experience in ordinary storysharing.
According to such purpose of this study, following subject of inquiry was established.
1. What mutual understanding do children experience through ordinary storysharing?
Participants in this study are children aged 4 in class D at H kindergarten in C city. They are 20 in total, consisting of 10 girls and 10 boys. This study was conducted for 12 weeks in total, 10 weeks from May 13 to July 19 in 2019, followed by additional 2 weeks from Aug. 26 to Sept. 6 in the same year. Storysharing took place over topics on daily life during the day in a comfortable atmosphere, 47 times in total, 3~5 times a week. The researcher supported storysharing activities and observed the mutual understanding experienced by children. Various data, such as observation records, transcribed data, research diaries, and children's works were analyzed.
The findings of this study are as follows. Children's mutual understanding experiences in ordinary story sharing were categorized into ‘emotional mutual understanding’, ‘cognitive mutual understanding’ and ‘social and cultural mutual understanding’.
First, children experienced emotional mutual understanding through ordinary storysharing. Children lived in kindergarten, formed relationships in their daily lives and engaged in emotional interactions with other members. And, based on this, through ordinary storysharing, they felt a sense of belonging by telling stories about their lives outside classroom, sharing each other's secrets, and broadening their understanding of each other. They also showed the attitude of understanding their friends' feelings, empathizing with each other, and helping and considering others. Second, children experienced cognitive mutual understanding through ordinary storysharing. Children freely expressed their knowledge, shared what they knew, and learned directly and indirectly through this process. And they improved problem solving ability while solving various problems in the classroom through discussion. The researcher played a role of helping the cognitive mutual understanding of children by offering help when they needed.
Third, children experienced social and cultural mutual understanding through ordinary storysharing. Children came into contact with their egos and formed an identity for the culture surrounding them in the process of sharing stories. And they also showed an understanding of their surrounding environment by talking about the sustainable environment, practicing democratic attitude, and taking an interest in social phenomena, etc.
In conclusion, children experienced emotional mutual understanding by forming a sense of belonging or caring for each other through ordinary storysharing. And they experienced cognitive mutual understanding by expressing their thoughts and knowledge in various ways and creating greater knowledge. In addition, they experienced social and cultural mutual understanding that enabled them to shape their identity and understand their surroundings. Therefore, this study is meaningful in that children are able to make rich mutual understanding in various aspects by participating in ordinary storysharing activities and in turn it can help teachers who have had difficulty in carrying out the storysharing process.
