Children’s ability to understand internal states of others plays a critical role in their development of social behaviors. The aim of this study was to derive subtypes of children according to their levels of empathy and theory of mind (ToM) and analyze differences in levels of prosocial behavior between each subtype. A Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was used so as to identify the heterogeneity in children’s social understanding underlying their prosocial behaviors. Participants were 230 mothers of preschoolers aged 5 to 6 (116 boys and 114 girls). An online survey was conducted from August 18 to August 26, 2021, to assess children’s prosocial behavior, empathy, and ToM using questionnaires. SPSS 25.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY) and Mplus 8.6 (Muthén & Muthén, 2021) statistical programs were used for data analysis. Goodness-of-fit indices were referenced to determine the optimal number of latent profiles, and the BCH (Bolck-Croon-Hagenaars) method was used to examine differences in the levels of prosocial behavior between groups. LPA revealed that children were distinguished into ‘moderate social understanding-balanced group’, ‘low social understanding-ToM superior group’, ‘low social understanding-empathy superior group’, ‘high social understanding-ToM superior group’ based on their levels of empathy and ToM. ‘High social understanding-ToM superior group’ was rated as the most prosocial group and ‘low social understanding-ToM superior group’ as the least prosocial group. The difference in the levels of prosocial behavior between ‘moderate social understanding-balanced group’ and ‘low social understanding-empathy superior group’ was insignificant. Taken together, these findings highlight the heterogeneity of preschoolers’ social understanding profiles based on their levels of empathy and ToM. The need for an individualized intervention program to promote prosocial behavior based on preschoolers’ social understanding profiles is discussed.
