선진 제자백가의 생사관 연구 : 천인관계론을 중심으로 A Study on the Views of Life and Death in Pre-Qin Hundred Schools : Focusing on the Theory of Heaven-Human Relationship원문보기

In this research, the views of life and death of Confucianism, Mohism and Taoism representing the Hundred Schools of Thought in the Pre-Qin era were examined focusing on the theory of heaven-human relationship. The perspective of or attitude toward how a person understands and deals with the matter of life and death in his or her life is called ‘the view of life and death’(生死觀). As far as humans exist, death is inevitable, and from the viewpoint of humanities, there may be an essential aspect in the views of life and death running through the times. The meanings of ‘heaven’ in Pre-Qin Confucianism, Mohism and Taoism reflect the ideological tendencies and characteristics of the Hundred Schools of Thought at that time as they were. Therefore, investigation into their views of life and death in connection with the theory of heaven-human relationship will be an effective way to infer the essential feature of the views of life and death of the Hundred Schools of Thought. This study aims at examining the views of life and death of Confucianism, Mohism and Taoism, the representative schools of ancient Chinese Hundred Schools of Thought, deducting the substantial characteristics implied in them, and finding implications to establish a view of life and death for today. Then, what does the study on a view of life and death means? The speculation on life and death and the establishment of a view of life and death through it help individuals to think over what’s more important to themselves and how to manage limited time given to each. Then, each person can concentrate on the life given to himself or herself more independently and actively not being controlled by physical influences or various mental restrictions from the outside. In ancient Chinese philosophy, the relationship between ‘heaven’(天) and ‘humans’(人) was one of representative categories, and all the Hundred Schools of Thought developed discussion from the aspect of the relationship between heaven and humans. That was because the changing process of the heaven-human relation was also the process of establishment and development of philosophy during the Pre-Qin period. The Pre-Qin Confucian view of life and death was based on the concept of ‘heavenly order’(天命). Before Yin and Shang(殷商) era, ‘heavenly order’ as Sangje’s will was absolute, and humans were subordinate just as Sangje’s belongings. Accordingly, life and death were considered to be controlled by Sangje. Duke of Zhou(周公) suggested ‘the view of heavenly order’(天命觀) based on human morality from the former Sangje-oriented view at the beginning of Western Zhou(西周). This political ideas of Duke of Zhou affected Confucius, too. Confucius succeeded Duke of Zhou’s theory of heaven-human relation and established the basic contents of his own relation theory of heaven and human, which Mencius and Xun Kuang inherited and used to form their own theory of relation between heaven and humans respectively. Therefore, the Pre-Qin Confucian theory of heaven-human relationship showed the ideological flow with changing center from Sangje to humans. In terms of the theory of the relation between heaven and humans, the Pre-Qin Confucian view of life and death can be summarized as Confucius’ ‘humanistic view of life and death’, Mencius’ ‘view of life and death of Cheoninsangtong(heaven and human communicate each other)’, and Xun Kuang’s ‘view of life and death of Cheoninsangbun(heaven and humans are different)’. In addition, when the views of life and death are divided into the view of life and the view of death, the Pre-Qin Confucian views of life and death can be regarded as ‘a realistic view of life’ and ‘a value-oriented view of death’. ‘The realistic view of life’ included Confucian humanism and the idea of considering life important, and tried to prioritize life in the reality over death, and a living person’s matters over ghosts. On the other hand, Confucius’ ‘Salsinseongin(sacrificing oneself to preserve one's integrity)’ and Mencius’ ‘Sasaengchwieui(sacrificing oneself to pursue righteousness)’ spirit directly showed ‘a value-oriented view of death’ based on Confucian moral idealism. Confucian notion of ‘Sambulhu(three things that remain even after death)’ later became Confucian scholars’ life goal and motivity of life in the reality. Moreover, the idea that “my life is passed down through family life.” had an impact on Confucian Hujanggusang(luxurious and long funeral rites) and the culture of ancestral rites in the following generations. While Mohist concept of ‘heaven’ not only accepted the notion of Sangje as it was but also proved its existence, it emphasized active overcoming of ‘the nature’, which was different from the Confucian theory of heaven-human relationship. Therefore, not like Confucian argument, the Pre-Qin Mohist view of life and death developed its view of life and death focusing on ‘Sampyo’(三表, three norms). The discussion of the Mohist view of life and death can be summarized as follows. First, in 「Bimyeong」, Mohism denied nominalism or fatalism, and proposed the view of life to actively overcome the natural condition given in the reality through labor. In Mohism, life equaled labor. Second, in 「Myeonggwi」, Mohism acknowledged the existence of ghosts and Sangje, yet not as what to be worshiped in religion or as the one in charge of post-death, but in order to promote their own group’s various ideologies by making use of their authority. Third, in 「Jeoljang」, Mohism criticized the burial of the living with the dead along with Hujanggusang(luxurious and long funeral rites) thoroughly from a utilitarian perspective, and suggested alternatives. They affirmed that humans became ghosts after death, but always gave priority to life rather than to ghosts. Fourth, in 「Gwieui」, Mohism connected all value standards including righteousness(義) as a value standard of life and death with the nation, all people, or Mohist group’s common good(公利). In particular, they had the collective feature of putting the ‘benefits’ of the nation ahead of an individual’s life value even in the face of death. In short, the Mohist view of life and death basically rejected individualism and moralism, and was completely utilitarian. In the aspect of the theory of heaven-human relationship, the concept of ‘heaven’ in Taoism basically referred to the nature. Thus, regarding the relation theory of heaven and humans, the Pre-Qin Taoist view of life and death didn’t have the same variability as in Confucianism. Laozi was categorized into the Taoist school along with Zhuangzi, and Laozi as the father of Taoism worked at the end of the Spring and Autumn period, and Zhuangzi worked in the middle of the Warring States period. ‘Muwijayeon’(無爲自然, nature as it is), the central idea of Taoism means “not doing against one’s will but being for oneself”. In other words, Taoist philosophy can be regarded as ‘Cheoninhapil(heaven and humans as one)’ in that it rejects all kinds of artificiality and includes humans in the natural ‘heaven’. Moreover, while Confucianism, Mohism and the School of Law concentrated on the salvation of the society with regard to the same social problems, Taoism focused on the salvation of each life and mind. So, the Pre-Qin Taoist view of life and death can be summarized as ‘a natural view of life and death’ and ‘an individualistic view of life and death’. Meanwhile, because Taoism had a strong concept of life and death as one, its view of life and view of death were covered separately as in Confucianism or Mohism. To sum up the views of life and death of the Pre-Qin Hundred Schools of Thought, they basically took life very seriously. Yet, each school had a different emphasis in practice, and all of them had the notion of transcending death. For example, Confucianism hoped to reach a very high level of morality during their lifetime so that their fame would last to the next generations and forever, through which, they tried to overcome death. On the other hand, Taoism made efforts to transcend death through the unity with ‘Tao’. In addition, Mohism wanted to go beyond death through ‘Gwi(鬼, ghost)’ after one died. Furthermore, as for the same social problems, the Hundred Schools of Thought chose to save the world reasonably based on their own theories, namely, Confucianism and Mohism worked for the salvation of the society, and Taoism tried to save life and human mind. As for the modern implications of the views of life and death of the Hundred Schools of Thought in the Pre-Qin period, first, they came to deny ghosts gradually while going through Pre-Qin Confucianism to Confucius, Mencius and Xun Kuang so that their following generations didn’t presume life after death, and it can be said to have affected the formation of Chinese present-life-oriented view of life. Also, Confucian “funeral rites and ancestral ritual formalities” replaced the functions of other religions suggesting eternal life in the afterlife in some aspects. Confucianism, which didn’t establish the existence of immortal souls or afterlife world like heaven or paradise, may have wanted to secure ‘eternity’ offered by religions through the ancestral ritual formalities. Meanwhile, ‘determinism’ is an ideal not only in Confucianism but also in Taoism, and many people still believe and are being affected by this ‘fatalism’. This notion has the proper function of giving people mental comfort of ‘acceptance’ or ‘understanding’, but also seems to have the adverse effect of hindering finding proper reasons and solutions of a problem. The religious notion of believing in ghosts, one of the Pre-Qin Taoist view of life and death, may have given comfort and strength to the lower classes at desperate moments during the dark time when they might face death any time. After all, facing extreme pain and fear of death, humans have to pursue ‘god’ or at least rely on ‘fate’ and accept it. It’s due to vulnerable humans’ necessity regardless of the truth about their existence. That is, the philosophical and reasonable views of life and death of Confucianism or Taoism are not enough for the acceptance or consolation of one’s own death or death of those they love. Whereas, the Pre-Qin Taoist natural view of life and death is recently drawing more attention facing the crisis of ‘environmental problems’. Moreover, in the aspect that how much an individual’s freedom is guaranteed is an indicator of historical development, the fact that Taoism suggested the importance of individual life and tried to save life and human mind presents a view of life and death ahead of times, and is still worthy of appreciation today.
