Prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridge which adopts high strength steel strand into concrete have been developed in 1950s, and applied to various projects, including small and medium span road bridges or railway bridges. However, since 1980s, traffic have been built up along with rapid economic growth. As a result, the need of technology for low depth girder bridge has been risen in order to produce long span bridge, utilize the spaces under the bridges, and secure cross-section of river. In the case of rivers, cross-section of river is deficient because the flood inflow rate of rivers increases rapidly in a very short time due to climate change and urbanization. Furthermore, girder needs to have longer span because of the minimum standard of river planning guideline. Moreover, demand of low depth girder bridges have been increased to implement longitudinal plan of connecting roads which was already placed. Because of that, various research studies have been conducted and put to practical use overseas by using high strength materials or optimizing the cross-section of girder. In South Korea, unlike overseas, researches have been carried out adding construction stages to implement long span and low depth. Therefore, this study is performed to optimize the cross section of PSC I girder as in the case of overseas. This paper introduces a method that has equal girder height and span length without acquiring additional construction stages while satisfying domestic standards. To find the optimal cross section of girder for long span and low depth, changes of web thickness, protruding flange size, and upper and lower flange size was repeated until the optimal cross-section was presented in consideration of stability and constructability. In order to verify the performance of the optimal cross section, a 60 meters of real-scale specimen was fabricated and static structural behavior analysis static structural behavior test was performed. The static structural behavior test confirms the stability of the PSC I girder proposed in this paper. Thereafter, nonlinear analysis in finite element analysis was carried out to compare with the test results of real-scale specimen and the structural behavior up to the limit state. Thereby, we verifies proposed nonlinear analysis model , and suggest a verification system that can be applied to the design of the Improved PSC type I section. Improved PSC I girder cross section has structural safety at the proposed depth , and span length. Accordingly, comparing with the section of PSC girder which is commonly used in South Korea, improve PSC I girder section is possible to apply long span and low depth without adding construction prestressing stages.
