The purpose of this study is to develop practical knowledge and improve professionalism about reading wordless picture books. In order to explore reading strategies faithful to the context of this field, the study was conducted as a collaborative action research method, combining the teacher's specific and practical knowledge with the researcher's academic and theoretical knowledge. The participant observation took place from March to September 2019, for Y teacher and children at D daycare center. In-depth interviews, children portfolios, field documentation, researcher and teacher journals were collected and analyzed.
The subject matters to discuss are as follows :
1. How the process of collaborative action research for reading wordless picture books? 2. How is the change of the teacher in the collaborative action research process for reading wordless picture books? 3. How is the change of children in the collaborative action research process for reading wordless picture books?
The results of this study are as follows:
First, the collaborative action research process for reading wordless picture books was conducted four times in four stages, starting with diagnosing problems, ‘reviewing related literature’, ‘searching reading strategies’, ‘applying reading strategies’, ‘evaluating reading strategies’, and reflecting on them. The first stage was the process in which Y teacher, who had no experience reading wordless picture books, tried the basic reading strategy of wordless picture books. The second stage was the process of selecting wordless picture books with various contents and applying various reading strategies to each picture book. The third stage was the process by which the teacher autonomously selected and utilized the appropriate reading strategy for the picture book. The fourth stage was the process in which the reading strategy was embodied in all contexts, including teacher, children, and classroom. Second, in the collaborative action research process for reading wordless picture books, the teacher's behavior changed from ‘accustomed and comfortable behavior’ to ‘behavior in consideration of media characteristics’. It was to ‘deviate from existing teaching methods’ and ‘find reading strategies tailored to our class’ to get information about reading strategies by shifting from ‘teacher-centered’ to ‘child response-centered’. During this process, the teacher's teaching efficacy on the reading of wordless picture books was improved. Third, in the collaborative action research process for reading wordless picture books, the children showed a change from ‘simple reading to see pictures’ to ‘reading meaning of pictures (picture reading)’. This shows that children are enjoying wordless picture books as they develop from ‘passive readers’ to ‘active interpreters’. Through this collaborative action research, the teacher has formed practical knowledge about reading wordless picture books and improved teaching efficacy. and the children were able to become readers who actively enjoyed wordless picture books through ‘picture reading’. The significance of this study is that it provided a way for teachers to actively use wordless picture books in the field.
