The quantitative and qualitative performance of university graduates in the labor market is somewhat different by their major. In particular, graduates from the humanities are reported to have lower quantitative and qualitative achievements in the corporate labor market compared to other majors. However, previous studies do not exactly explain why humanities graduates have shown lower quantitative and qualitative results in the white-collar labor market. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to focus on graduates in the humanities disciplines, and to look closely at what their search for employment is like and what experiences they have in the process. Qualitative research methods were applied to analyze the experiences of the humanities graduates in depth before they obtained employment and to identify various factors and give context to their experiences during their job search process. In this study, the following three research questions were set. Firstly, what experiences do humanities graduates have in their search for corporate employment? Secondly, what steps do humanities graduates undertake until they are finally employed? Thirdly, what are the major types of corporate employment processes that humanities graduates experience? The research method of this study is as follows. Semi-structured one-on-one in-depth interviews were performed on 14 subjects who graduated from four-year university majoring in humanities disciplines and have been employed in a corporate setting for fewer than 3 years. Interview data were analyzed based on the grounded theoretical method of Strauss and Corbin (1990; 1998; 2001). The major findings can be summarized as follows. First, categorizing through open coding works yielded 179 concepts, 55 subcategories, and 25 categories. Second, paradigm models of experiences of humanities graduate students in the employment process were presented. As a result, the main phenomenon that appeared in the employment process of the humanities graduates was anxiety due to the social limitations of their major; causal conditions for this phenomenon include ‘selecting humanities major' (itself based on personal factors such as academic interest and aptitude, academic performance (acceptance probability), and external motivational factors such as receiving recommendations and references, including from influential sources), as well as ‘having affection for the major in the initial period after entering university.’ In addition, there were some contextual conditions that influence the phenomenon such as ‘mismatch between student aptitude and the demands of the major discipline’, ‘dissatisfaction with the major environment’, ‘lack of support from the humanities department and professor’, ‘barriers against humanities graduates’, and ‘barriers against women’. Intervening conditions with causal and contextual impacts on phenomena were found to include ‘compromise after recognizing the reality of the professions available to a humanities major, 'giving up after poor performance in government officer or public servant exams', 'discovering a lack of job preparedness', ‘frequently quitting or dropping out’, 'experiencing job stress', and 'having an optimistic and positive attitude toward employment'. Proactive strategies manifested as intentional actions taken to deal with these phenomena include ‘exploring career alternatives in fields not related to the major’, 'being helped by local human resources and on/off-campus programs', ‘having a grace period for the future’, 'strengthening job competitiveness through multiple majors', ‘preparing a job specification’, ‘submitting applications for employment’, and ‘exerting resilience’. Lastly, the end results of the job search process include 'finding a new self through the process of seeking/obtaining employment', ‘finding/maintaining employment through various difficulties,’ 'discovering the key factors to succeed in finding/maintaining employment' and ‘balancing satisfaction and dissatisfaction in the workplace’. The core category was ‘overcoming the real barriers facing humanities majors and taking a step toward employment’. This study’s third major finding deals with the stages of the employment process of the humanities graduates; the stages were derived through process analysis, and the types were classified by analyzing the main factors acting at each stage. From the results, the following four states were derived: ‘exploration of career alternatives’, ‘career alternative expansion/conversion’, ‘employment preparation behavior’, and ‘job retention’. In addition, there were five types of employment process for the humanities graduates, two of which were further divided into two sub-types respectively. Therefore, there were a total of 6 types. The 6 types are classified as 'major attached', 'major compromised', 'early employment preparation behavior type', 'major evading', 'planned happenstance', and 'late challenge'. From the results of this study, implications were drawn from the dimension of individuals who majored in humanities, from the dimension of college and academic department level, from the dimension of university counselors who give career and employment guidance, and from the dimension of the nation. Then, follow-up studies were also proposed. This study is meaningful in that it provided empirical data for humanities majors to prepare for employment by looking at the employment experiences of individual graduate students in-depth, as opposed to previous studies that relied on quantitative approaches such as employment rate and employment determinants due to a lack of empirical and exploratory research on the employment of humanities college graduates. The experiences of individual graduates of the humanities who have been employed in difficult situations will help future humanities graduates improve their career planning and employment strategies. In addition, the thorough description and analysis of the corporate employment process of humanities college graduates presented in this study is expected to be used as a very useful resource to allow university career counsellors to provide counseling services differentiated by type.
