In order to improve the high power performance of Li/SOCl 2 cells, a di sordered mesoporous carbon (DMC) with controlled pore structure was synthesized as an carbon cathode material using a method of commerci ally available silica template. The effects of the specific surface area a nd pore distribution of DMC was investigated on the electrode manufa cturing process and electrochemical characteristics. DMC as an electode material for high performance Li-SOCl 2 batt eries : DMC was synthesized with an average pore size of 10 nm and showed high Li/SOCl 2 battery performance with high rate and high ca pacity characteristics. A DMC material with a high specific surface are a of 997.8 m 2 /g achieved with a capacity of 41 mAh/cm 2 at a discharg e current density of 1.25 mA/cm 2 . The high rate discharge capacity characteristics of carbon cathode see ms to be affected the specific surface area of the material and the por osity, and the electrode porosity related to the diffusion of the electroly te shows a high correlation with the high capacity characteristics of the battery. It was clarified that the operating voltage has a strong corr elation with the specific surface area. Effect of imcrostructure of DMC on the electrochemical performa nce of Li-SOCl 2 batteries : The microstructure of DMC material wit h average pore size of 20 nm were controlled via composition ratio. T he value of specific surface area has been shown gradually to increase as the compounding ratio of colloidal silica increases, and the highest s pecific surface area value of 1398.7 m 2 /g and total pore volume value o f 4.17 cc/g are obtained for the composition of DMC-1.5. Battery performance turns out to be proportional to the value of specifi c surface area and the value of total pore volume. The capacity of 970.4 mAh/g-C at a discharge current density of 10 mA/cm 2 and the intermediate discharge voltage of 3.293 V were obtain ed from DMC-1.5 Diffusion has been confirmed as the most important factor, and control ling the microstructure of the carbon material is effective for improvin g the high output characteristics of Li/SOCl 2 batteries. From these results, it was confirmed that it is possible to control the specific surface area and pore structure of the carbon material through the method of synthesizing a commercially available silica colloid.
