The purpose of this study is to examine the instructional direction of Directive Speech Act in a business discourse situation that can help Korean Language learners to adapt to organizational culture and improve work skills for Korea and Korean Language related companies. The Directive Speech Act in business Korean is closely related to all business situations occurring at the office site, such as boss’s business instructions and collaboration among colleagues. It is a waste of time and energy to continue speaking in a way to concern the feelings each other every time and in a way to relieve the pressure for what he or she feels whenever directive speech acts of business conversation.
That is the role and responsibility of the directive speech act in business Korean that clearly expresses what the one wants to achieve while considering the counterpart and then leads to the best results. Therefore, this study builds a corpus of business Korean related to directive speech act and classifies them based upon Speech Act classification criteria established through prior studies.
To review the content and direction of the current educational instruction for the directive speech act, the dialogues and discourse samples in 5 types of business Korean textbooks had been gathered and analyzed. Then, as there was a limit to the collection of actual business Korean discourse and directive speech act, this study analyzes the office drama script corpus that shows various types of business discourse and figures out the trend of the directive speech act in business Korean conversation.
The analysis of the corpus of business Korean textbooks and the drama script of is as follows. First, the portion of each type of directive speech act. That is, the analysis of the business Korean textbooks and the drama script corpus shows the different distribution of each type of directive speech act.
Through this study, it was able to be figured out the difference of distributions among types of the directive speech act in the Business Korean textbook, which shows the current instructional direction of Speech act, and drama script text reflected realistic Business Korean dialogues. Based on this, it could be an opportunity to consider the balance of the types and levels of the directive speech act in any kind of business discourse situations for business Korean Language education.

There was a difference in the pattern of the strategy by each type of directive speech act between the business Korean textbooks and drama script corpus. In the business Korean textbook, the proportion of direct speech act and indirect speech act strategies was about 50%, respectively. However, in the analysis of the drama script corpus, the direct speech act strategy shows a significantly higher rate than the indirect speech act strategy.
Because Korean is a high-context language, in general, it is intended to avoid any conflict on a conversation by choosing a strategy for a directive speech act, which can be a burden to the listener. It is supposed that these intentions are included in various examples of the business Korean textbooks. Therefore, it could be understood that the proportion of an indirect speech act strategy for each type of directive speech act is higher than the result of analysis for the drama script corpus.
Lastly, the distribution of the relationship between the speaker and the listener for each type of directive speech act. As a result of the analysis of the directive speech act corpus in business Korean textbooks, it was unbalanced for the distribution of the relationship between a speaker and a listener. For example, the sample sentences of a business Korean textbook, it needs to be considered for the proportion of the directive discourse by the senior to the subordinates, as well as the arrangement of the situation that the speaker, who is working under, asks, proposes, or suggests to the listener, the senior. That is, the various instructional discourse situations that cross over the vertical relationship, as well as examples of discourses between equal relationships, which are currently appearing in a large proportion, should be reflected in textbook or curriculum design.
