The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of participating in school sports club competition on the self-esteem of specialized high school students and the level of satisfaction they feel towards their school life. Based on the analysis, this study will: 1) Examine the importance and meaning of participating in school sports club activities and competitions in building build self-esteem and increasing satisfaction in school life; 2) Explore ways to actively induce specialized high school students to participate in school sports club activities and competitions; and 3) Provide as a baseline data that can be used in developing plans to expand and promote school sports club activities. For the purposes of this study, 300 students in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade of high school enrolled at six specialized agricultural high schools in Chungcheongnam-do were selected using the random sampling method for a survey. Of the 300 surveys, 57 insufficiently answered surveys were discarded. As a result, 243 valid samples were analyzed for the study. Data was processed using SPSS Version 25.0 in accordance with the purpose of this study. Frequency analysis was performed to grasp general characteristics, and Cronbach's alpha (α) was calculated through reliability analysis to test the internal consistency of measurement tools. An independent t-test and one-way ANOVA were conducted to examine difference in self-esteem and the degree of school life satisfaction for each gender and each school grade upon participating in a school sports club. Correlation analysis was conducted to examine the correlation between self-esteem and the degree of satisfaction regarding school life. Finally, self-esteem was selected as an independent variable, whereas school life satisfaction was selected as a dependent variable for multiple regression analysis. The above analyses yielded the following results. First, participating in a school sports club competition had the following impact on self-esteem. In terms of positive self-esteem, students who had the experience of participating in one or more school sports club competitions had higher positive self-esteem, on average, than those who had no experience in school sports club competitions. In terms of negative self-esteem, on average, students with previous experience participating in school sports club competitions had lower negative self-esteem than those who did not have prior experience in school sports competitions. Both differences were statistically significant. Meanwhile, there was no statistically significant difference in self-esteem between different genders or school grades of students who had participated in school sports club competitions before. Second, participating in school sports club competitions had the following impact on the degree of satisfaction towards school life. Students with previous experience in school sports club competitions scored higher in terms of their relationship with peers, relationship with teachers, learning activities, compliance with rules, school events, and special activities when compared to students with no such experience to a statistically significant degree. Meanwhile, there was no statistically significant difference in satisfaction towards school life according to the gender or school grade of students who had experience participating in school sports club competitions. Third, looking at the correlation between self-esteem and satisfaction towards school life, positive self-esteem had a positive (+) correlation with the relationship with peers, relationship with teachers, learning activities, compliance with rules, school events, and special activities. Conversely, negative self-esteem was negatively (-) correlated with the relationship with peers, relationship with teachers, learning activities, compliance with rules, school events, and special activities. Fourth, looking at the effect of self-esteem on satisfaction towards school life due to participation in school sports club competitions, positive self-esteem had a positive (+) impact on the relationship with peers, relationship with teachers, learning activities, compliance with rules, school events, and special activities. Meanwhile, negative self-esteem had a negative (-) impact on these factors. In conclusion, this study found that the experience of participating in school sports club competitions had a positive effect on self-esteem and satisfaction towards school life. Furthermore, this study discovered that self-esteem developed by participating in school sports club competitions had a positive effect on the sub-variables of satisfaction towards school life. Thus, this study finds that it is necessary to develop a variety of programs and propose effective operational methods for those programs, so that students at specialized high schools can continue to take interest and participate in school sports club activities.
